Default horrible noise

Hi all, I have a 1992 cbr1000f. I was riding it the other night and there was a horrific screeching sound (sounded just like a dry bearing seizing). I pulled over and no noise, carried on riding and nothing, I have ridden it twice since and only heard it quietly, it sounds as if it's coming from the left hand side of the bike and seems worse when cold. It only does it when moving with the clutch out and in gear, I managed to make it do it by opening and closing the throttle at low speed, but that's it...not much to go on I know, but interested to see if anyone has any ideas?

My guess would be a wheel bearing or the sprocket carrier bearing, you should test them asap, you don't want one of them seizing while riding the bike.

Hey Dan, welcome to the forum.
I haven't had to case apart but the starter clutch may be a problem if its sticking.
I was thinking the same thing as hawkwind but you say it comes and goes with the clutch and engine temp.

Thanks guys.
Put a new chain and sprocket kit on the bike today, and found the problem...the 2 bolts on the front sprocket were loose and rubbing on the chain case...all sorted now

Lucky you found it when you did! Rather than when doing 10,000rpm in 4th

That could have been real interesting couldnt it?
Good thing it is sorted out without any serious pain other than to the wallet.
Enjoy your riding

I can't imagine the damage of a sprocket coming off. Worse would be the rear wheel locking up at speed. Glad you sorted it out Dan.
