Gearing my 1000F to hang with a blackbird.
My buddy just got a blackbird and wants to line up and see how bad he will walk my 94 1000F. I told him its a pointless race as the bird has 164 hp and mine is rated at 135hp. He will destroy my ole 1000F. He said he just wanted to do it to see if it would even be close. I said maybe if I change my gearing to a 16/45 i may be able to hang with him to a 100 mph. I know after 100 its the bird would walk me bad. I doulbt I will change the gearing as I really like the 17/42 perfect for cruising. But was just wondering if the 16/45 would allow me to hang with the wicked bird. Bench racing at this point seems more applicable.

I'd second that. The bird has savage top end speed that a 1000F can't match, but off the line they aren't exactly rockets. Drop your gearing and you'll give him a good go. Do a few practice runs to get used to how she launches and you should be good to go. A lot of the drag racing performance comes from the dude under the helmet
and if he's just got the bird, take him on soon while he's still getting used to it HAHA

If I do the gear change and I might the race would take place at the local 1/4 mile track. I have done over a 100 passes with my cars over the years. So I am decent with the Christmas tree lights. Nice to get a time slip also. I know the ole 1000fs are good for high 10's low 11's around 125 mph. Thats also with a 160 lb professional driver. If I ran in the 11s I would be happy.
Never ever raced a bird much less seen one on the road until now. I have read a ton on them. I know not many bikes can touch one up on the top speed besides the busa and Zx14. I just want to beat him in the 1/4 mile or at least to 100 mph during the 1/4 mile run.
He is pretty cocky about the bird and rightfully so, they are bad ***. So being the underdog it would be nice to shut him up.
If we went to the track now, how bad would he beat me. I have a KN filter, new spark plugs, freshly cleaned carbs, Two Brothers exhaust, and stock gearing. I can launch her pretty hard. She pulls hard but I doubt enough to take him in the 1/4. He is a experienced rider, but is new to the bird.

Owning both the bikes you speak of Matt I'll say this. The bird is awesome off the line and will smoke a 1000F every time as well as top end speed. As for mid range I don't really know as I haven't lined them up per se. I ride both regularly and can say with some experience that the bird is an awesome machine and although I love my 1000F dearly, it isnt a Blackbird

Yea I figured with more cc's (=torque) and 30 more hp it would smoke the ole 1000f.
As good as the 1000f is which IMHO is a great bike, the bird is leaps better in power.
I will say when we had the bikes side by side the 1000f seems to be larger bike with more fairing area than the bird. Looks like the 94 1000f would give more wind protection and comfort. Both bikes are awesome and hopefully my buddy will let me ride the bird.
If we can get our schedules right we both are going to go to the dragway and see what happens stock vs stock. Which i already know LOL. But he may screw the launch up and it will be all 1000F. LOL
I am a 230 lb rider and he is 220. I am hoping to run in the high 11s with my weight.
Really looking to see what she traps in mph. She pulls really hard. My 88 cane was geared 16/44 and pulled really strong off the line, carried the front tire a few inches off the ground in first gear and part way through second gear on hard acceleration, but this 94 seems a little stronger in the midrange and topend and is running 17/42 gears. The track timer and mph will tell if she is making power. I hope to line up against some of the new 600's also.

The 1000F was the father of the Blackbird. What father wouldn't be proud to see his son do well. But he won't give it away without trying. Give it a go, just for fun. Don't mod the bike for the sake of warfare, you enjoy the bike as it is don't ruin it by trying to make a half baked drag racer. It seems you guys are mates anyway so go have a run against the bird, see how close you can get, then enjoy a pint. No shame in loosing to the bike that Honda spent millions developing to improve over the 1000F, its logical
