Default failure log cbr1000fl

Hi All
just reminiscing about all the things i have had to change on the cbr
they say japanese bikes are pretty well perfect well:
i also have a triumph bonneville of 78( 1st owner) and have had to change less parts than on the cbr

front wheel bearings twice( rust out due to poor seals now fitted skf and no more problems
steering head bearings due to pitting, they are like bicycle bearings
brake caliper seals 3 times , the calipers corrode and contract the dust seals and sieze up the pistons
speedo cable
repair divers fatigue cracks in the fairings with carbon fibre
exhaust collector rotted out replaced by stainless
exhaust seals disintegrated
fuel tank due to fatigue cracks at front due to poor welding method
cam chain tensioners 4 x
cam chain x 1
rocker cover seal 1 x
plugs 5 x due to fouling
plug leads 2x due to arcing
carbs due to nr 2 jets blocked up
petcock due to blocked up
petcock diaphram set
alternator chain tensioner
alternator vibration damper
re machine rear disc due to grooves (quite difficult to fine someone who will want to do it due to hard stainless buggers up tools

and yet i still like the bike
must be mad!

One heck of a list Paul!

Only had mine 8 months and done the alternator damper and all wheel bearings. But I did service it and put in stick coils

Cheers, SB

Not mad - just maintaining a very worthwhile investment in a classic motorcycle.

Having said that the single biggest failure of all on this awesome machine is the CCT

My list ........... well Just ask Seb the internetz just ain't big enough now is it ?

Hey:

CBRPaul, I have a few questions.

Have you owned the bike (CBR) since new or was it purchased used?

What year/model is it?

Where do you live climate wise, or area of the world?

And How many miles on the CBR vs the Triumph?

These bikes are old and things will wear out and go wrong. My 89 was bought with 40,000 original km on it. Other than regular servicing, tyres, battery, chain and sprockets and wheel bearings, it hasn't given me an ounce of trouble ( touch wood ). I've put 28,000 km on it since I've owned it and it is still as good as the day I bought it. Obviously the way they are treated before you buy them count a lot towards how it behaves down the track. Seems though you've had your fair share of stuff to repair and replace. I hope it gets better for you. Cheers

reply to cbr1988
i dont include the usual wear parts like tyres and chains etc
its a fl so you can guess the year( uk g reg )
bought 2nd hand at 18000 mil, now 50000 mi
always stored in a dry garage, just cruised not raced, mostly dry use , in belgium
exterior appearance almost like new
forgot 2 things
changed voltage regulator ( burned out)
had a leaky battery( not the fault of the bike ) that dripped acid all over swing arm( repainted by myself), silly thing is that honda fits a sealed battery box , but no drain tube so it goes on to the metal , now corrected

Yes - see attached....

WHAT DID THIS MEAN & ACHIEVE?
1. The bike was more than2 times (200%)outside the limits @ 65,000km.
2. The guages got within the limits @ 62%
3. The CarbTune Pro was easier to use, got better calibration and got within the limits @ 25%
4. Before the Sync I did not notice any degradation in bike performance. After the Sync I did not "hear" any difference at idle (this surprised me). After Sync there was a remarkable improvement in low speed torque/smoothness (well worth all my effort). There was a slight lowering of normal bike temprature (cylinders working together / not fighting with each other). There was no noticeable difference in top speed/power (although I tested to top speed I could not tell any difference - which I'm not surprised of.)
