Default Electrical not fuel Ahhhaaa

Got something figured out today. My 88. 1000
Running temperamental. Figured out today that won't idle when warm but turned off headlight highbeam (low is burnt out) so light was off and idled fine. When fan kicked in bike died when idling. Bike seems okay now when riding.

Any ideas where to go from here?

John

I'd say alternator. Follow manual for testing.

Check the current (voltage) going into the battery at 3000RPM - if it's less than 13.5-15V your regulator/rectifier is probably toast.
These bikes are known for it........easy fix and not too expensive
I'm willing to bet that at idle there's not enough current getting through to run the bike with the fan on or the highbeam......
Electrex Systems
They make an aftermarket unit that a lot of us have fitted. Comes with 12 months guarantee and is a far better unit than original from Honda (and much cheaper)

+1 ^^^ R/R issue - check the plug going to the R/R right below the petcock
for corrosion too

Thanks for the tips

Ground on battery was loose. Idles like a dream and thought I had it beat. Let it idle till fan kicked in turned on headlight and ran fine another 15 min and then just stopped.

Turned light off and ran fine turned light on an dead!

Ran another 15 and running rough with fan and then quit.

Does the rectifier deteriorate after running?

I pulled rectifier out of my spare 88 bike which is rapidly turning into organ donor. Oh well best to have 1 running bike. Will install tommorow after work.

Idled perfectly for 15. Battery terminal definitely was causing problems. 1 problem down 1 to go ... I hope.

I'd still keep an eye on it.
I have a voltmeter on my bike to show me what's happening all the time..........
Cheap and great for peace of mind.

Of course not that simple.
Pulled rr out of bike two and two connectors on run plug are a black and a bit melted. Plastic is fine. Cleaned with wd and scrapped and a dose of dialectic grease and swapped.

Bike ran the best it has ran since surgery went about 30 k and stopped for a visit and drove another 30 k. Bike running perfectly. Fan on and it quit on me at idle again.

Think rr 2 is toast too. Better than before but not right. Will turn up idle speed until I can get new RR. Anyone bought from Rick's..???

Can get duty free in Vancouver. From stator in Quebec.
