I usually take mine of every 2 years, wire brush them clean, then use some high-temp paint (either BBQ or equivalent from dealer) and put about 3 coats on.

I think I have stove paint (1200* F) at the moment

They sell VHT header paint at advance auto. It's like $7-8/can. I've used it on gun slides too. lol...

You have to get everything pretty clean, tho. Don't want too much rust or it will just flake with the rust. Not bad stuff, tho.

Here's an LCP slide I did in black. Cooked it in the oven while the wife was out.

I still say go for the wheel balancer. Then you can start your own business and charge $15 to balance each tire.

As mentioned earlier, BBQ black. I have blacked out some engines with it and some pipes. It will be a flat black however. Any Lowe's, Home Depot or hardware store carries it. I am fond of Rust-Oleum BBQ black for some reason.

Oooh, at the bottom of that link is HIGH HEAT ULTRA semi-gloss enamel. The aged copper would look good on that slide Trout. Aged copper slide and gold tooth, you would be pimp n'.

This Hi-Temp offers aluminum color.

Also as mentioned, you will need to do follow up maintenance. As I recall, a lot of riding in the rain seamed to take it off the pipes quicker. Prep work will require you to sand the pipes to a clean metal surface as mentioned before.
