Default Disc Shims- no one ever mentions them

I swapped my ageing discs yesterday.
Ever since I've had the bike (20K miles, now 76K on the odo) she's had a bit of a judder on the front brakes. It's not really bothered me that much. I've been looking for some reasonably priced discs to replace them with then got offered a very nice condition pair for a steal.
AFter taking off the old ones I noticed there are shims between the disc and the wheel mounting points. They look like waxed paper or similar soft material. One was missing!!!
To my small brain that didn't look like a very good thing. I phoned my local bike shop and they happened to have one. I joked with the guy that it would probably be so cheap he'd have to give me some cash to take it away. Not so!
£2.58. Sheesh!!
It's about 0.5 mm thick. Anyone else here want to put money on that lissing shim having something to do with my brake judder?
Anyway, the new discs in place and she brakes smoothly and firmly.
How come no one ever mentions these little shims? On all the posts I've ever read about discs on the forum, I don't remember a soul ever referring to these.
Perhaps because everyone else doesn't have one missing like I did. If you had to buy them all new though it would cost you as much as a disc.
Do new discs come with these shims or are you supposed to do without them?

Well +1 I never noticed either Henry but I suppose if you went without them
the most that would happen is the inner brake pad would wear sooner than the outer !

Wonder if those new "wave" type discs (rotors) need 'em ?

That small of a spacing would not do much. I wounder if they were put there to stop galvanic action between dissimilar metals. Maybe the person at the Honda assembly plant didn't remove all the protective layers form the disc supplier. Hey! Who cares now anyway....The breaks work great and that's time to celebrate. Cheers!

^^^ That was my idea as well.

And Steve is right, I remember these shims being mentioned before, 'cos I knew they were a stupid price!

If I had to replace mine I'd be tempted to make my own, you can buy punch hole reinforcer's from any stationers, about £2 for 250!
