Default Disappearing Engine Oil

So the 1990 CBR1000F I picked up for $1800.00 and 39K Miles may need new Valve Guide Seals :-(
When I go on a 200-300 mile romp it will easily 'evaporate' 1/2 - 3/4 Qt of engine oil.
I've been running the std 10w/40. I've tried real motorcycle oil and Shell automotive oil.
My brother told me he did see the ocassional Blue James Bond trail on hard decelerations.

Has anyone in the Forum tried to replace the seals without removing the head?
We had an in-place spring compressor for Honda Automotive heads when I was Auto Tech 13 years ago.
Are there any for motorcycle heads?

I went for a hard 600 km run a few weeks ago and mine used about 120 ml on that run. When I ride her reasonably normal though she doesnt use any. Just a sign of wear and tear. I always keep her topped up and a little over the top mark on the dipstick. My BB never uses a drop no matter how much I give it to her. Good luck with the seal replacement. I will leave mine until she gets really bad. Toppin the oil up is the cheaper option atm. cheers.

hey man!
with nearly 40 thousand miles, your bike is near to need some special attentions.
Make sure that the camshaft chain hasn't too much wear and is not elonged... this could due to set the engine out of time and may be the valves does not close-open when they should do.

some guys at spain have had the same problem, and have nearly finished with the oil consumption by using mineral oil 20-50 + metallube additive for motorbikes.

Yeah I'd second the use of 20/50 weight oil in helping with less consumption, however
I'm not big on additives .

I think the tip on making sure your timing is spot on is a good one ....!

Castrol 4T 20/50 motorcycle is a robust heavy weight bike specific oil imo

Careful using heavier weight oil in cold climates....................!!
My bike has 55000 miles up and has used about half a pint every 750 miles for the last 6 years. I'm not bothered by it.

And I don't know of a procedure to replace valve stem seals without removing the head.

Use a car spring comp. - same procedure.
