Question Compressing fork springs

Hi there guys,

I'm going to be rebuilding the front forks (yet again!!).

I've managed to find a pair of brand new fork tubes for the job this time at a bargain price.

Harry .T. Hamster gave me a set a while ago and though I used genuine Honda seals they have started to leak again so I can only think the tiny amount of corrosion they had was enough to break the new seals . Can't imagine why else they would be leaking again , unless I put the seals in upside down , any thoughts ?

Any way I was wondering if there is an easier method of compressing the fork springs when reassembling , easier than me trying to compress it by hand while my daughter slides in the shim ? Any tips will be greatfully accepted

Cheers .

When you put the seal in, was the open side with the spring showing placed down?

Any corrosion can hurt the seal. The tubes need to be polished smooth.

What I did on reassembly was to back the nut off and then slide the shim under and then tighten the nut. It is still a bitch. At least you had help, I didn't.

I am about to do this. I thought my brakes were leaking, but it is my fork. The right front brake is well lubricated. Glad I didn't find out the hard way.
Sooooo, I think you should do a write-up with pictures.
Pretty sorry way to get you to show me how, I admit it.
Good luck,
Patrick
