I need to get new tyre on back on my 92 CBR1000F. It currently has a 17/60zr17. Can I put a 190/50 17 on it. Will it have any affect on my speedo? or handling?

The speedo will show about the same since the diameter is fairly close. If the 170-tyre is flattened a new and well-profiled 190-tyre will feel and handle far better. The tyre to chain guard could be an issue though but that is solvable. In the long run a 170/60 or 180/55 tyre is a better choice since the bike will turn in quicker with the sharper profile and a lighter tyre. It also depends on what type of tyre you are using. A light and well profiled 190-tyre like e.g theMichelin Power tyre will handle road bumps during full leans better than an old type touring tyre in stock dimension, and vice versa. A 190 tyre on a 5.5” rim works better than one would expect, I’m using this combination on my Blackbird right now (same rim size as 1000 F), because it was the oneI had at home when I had to put a new on one very urgent. However, I’ll go back to 180 at next change since there is no benefit to use a 190-tyre on a 5.5” rim unless you want it for looks. A few new bikes are even provided with 190’s on 5.5” tyres, like the Ducati 999R –06. It is known that the cornering improves slightly when those bikes are provided with 180’s though.

 

Mine has a 180/60 on it and it looks/rides great. I didn't even know what the stock size is supposed to be.

 

I'm not really that fussed on what particular size I use. Its just that my rear tyre is basically down to canvas now & I am really low on $$ at the moment & cant afford the price of a new tyre. But a guy has offered me his spare tyre which isa Shinko Advance-005 190/50 for $50 & it has about 85% tread left.

I'd be very surprised if you could get it the clear the chainguard and chain on a 190 tyre.

Check with the local racing club to see if you can get some 2nd hand tyres or ebay.

Ok, Had a close look at the current back tyre which is a 170/60/17 & there is about a 10mm space between the side of the tyre & the chain. So if I got a 190 it would just touch the chain. Some one said that you can trim the side a little but dont like the sound of that.
The same guy that offered me the 190 said he also has a 160/60/17 I can have. Would this be too skinny?

go ahead and get the 190, it will fit and not hit the chain. look in my gallery, my 1988 is running a 190 now...

 

I have changed from 180 to 170 and I feel that it´s smoother in curves.
If Honda puts 170 original it has to be a reason.
I know that awider tire looks tuffer but.....

 

I am running the 180/55 tire..It fits great and looks to be as much as you can fit.

 

I have a 180 and there might be room to fit a 190.
I have a mark on my chain guard from the tire (can't rule out that the previous owner may had a 190 at one stage.


Dont you have spacers on the back to take the tire, how does it handle
