Default CCT - how does it work?

Can someone give a brief explanation of how the CCT works? I may have a look at it during the winter at which point I'll probably understand a bit more, but would like some info on it before I do.

Why does it have an oil reservoir?
I believe there's some sort of valve in it; what does that do?
What do the three guides/slippers do? Do they push the camchain inwards or outwards to tension it?
Why is a simple spring not good enough.

Sorry if some of these are dumb questions...

Thanks folks

Hi Howard, A combination of the 2 videos below should be instructive.

FOR..

How and why CCTs work... look here for generic info ...

We have a hydraulic type CCT so need for oil guide, oil reservoir and plunger.

Guides - guide the chain. Slippers put tension on the chain.
See here for worn components (Not our bike but you can see the concept) ...

I'll be doing an updated "How To" replacement for CCT and cam chain within the next month. I plan a lot of photos so keep a look out for that and it might help you a little more.
