Question Balancer adjustment

Thought I'd have a go at adjusting the balancer shaft as Sir trout had reminded me with a how too.

Now unfortunately I twisted my balancer shaft anticlockwise and it just keeps going , doesn't stop at all?

So I fiddled with it with the motor running and it seemed to smooth the tick-over out so tightened it back up (pinch-bolt) and left it at that.

But the question on my mind is why won't it stop turning? Has something dropped off inside or am I just cocking things up ?

I've heard of that happening before, Hawk - you should be fine.

Yep, I've heard of that too. Not sure why it happens exactly, but no ill effects reported and they end up just doing it like you did (with the engine running) and it was sorted out.

Glad yours is ok hawk but I tried adjusting mine for the same reason. Problem is mine is stuck. It wont move at all, so any ideas folks. Short of ripping her down, I dont wont to get brutle with it incase it damages something.

So we've got ones that won't stop turning and ones that won't turn at all.....

Not sure what to do with yours, wolf, other than button it up and leave it alone like you already did.

When you turn your balancer shaft it isn't tightening a bolt, or threading back and forth. It's running on an eccentric, moving closer to and further from a drive (or driven) gear within the eccentric's limits. I'm not sure - so take this next with a grain of salt - but think that when everything was new the eccentric would most likely place the drive and driven gears tight enough that the shaft would move no further. Everything has most likely worn and loosened with time so the gears no longer will mesh that tightly, letting the shaft turn forever.

The best you can do is find the spot with the least vibration and set it there. At its tightest you should hear a whine when the engine's running, at its loosest you get vibration. I set mine with the engine running, by the way. There has been some discussion in the past with varying opinions as to the wisdom of that. You'll have to make up your own mind as to how you perform the adjustment.
