Default Alternator O ring failure?

Greeting all I recently purchased a 96 CBR1000f with the intention of preparing it for a cross country trip.Cosmetically shes pretty rough but she runs and rides beautifully. But yesterday I discovered an oil leak. I traced it back to the the alternator and when I took off the cover sure enough the o ring was completely toast and in about 10 pieces. This seems kinda odd to me since the bike only has 13k on it. Has anyone else had this issue? Im a little worried the previous owner may have put some weird additive in the oil maybe? Im doing an oil change today but Im still a little worried about my other gaskets

There's a big O ring around the alternator. Sometimes they can be inserted incorrectly and damaged. I don't know of any oil additive which would cause an o ring to crumble, but some proprietary cleaners aren't good for them.

I'd buy a new one and refit...............ALSO - recently we had a member who had his oil thinned out due to petrol contamination - you may want to check your oil and replace it.

I corrected your original post

Here's where you can buy a new O ring for under $9.........

It's your choice - there isn't high oil pressure into the alternator see if you can find some O-ring in the correct diameter you may be OK, but joining the units with "make a gasket" isn't a good idea - very hard to separate them later, and they could crack when you try to pry them apart, then you're in for expensive stuff..................

Ok guess Ill just wait. Yeah I looked around a bit and an O-ring that size is only made specifically for that alternator on Honda bikes. No auto parts stores or anyone had anything close to the size needed. Also found it on partzilla for $5 and some change

Welcome to the forum AJ.

I don't man, these are older bikes and if she was sitting for some time it may have just rotted. I wouldn't worry much about any other o-rings or seals quite yet. No use worrying about things and loosing sleep for nothing.

Personally, I'd get some road time on her before a big trip. Lets you know how she's doing and toughens the back side. It's those new off the showroom floor vehicles that I worry about. You never know about them.
