View Full Version : K&N Air Filter Installation
K7inne09 08-15-2009, 05:15 PM I was browsing on ebay this morning and picked up a K&N Air Filter for $40 including shipping...needless to say pretty new with bikes and was just curious if there is anything in particular I should know before throwing this thing in....I just figured I'd change it cause idk when the last owner changed it....Anything will help!! Thanks!!....also is it true there is a HP, torque and accel. gain with these filters?
Install is pretty easy. Just keep track of all the screws you take out. There is a screw in the middle of the airbox cover that you'll need a long skinny phillips head screwdriver to get out, keep that in mind.
And no, I doubt you'll notice a change with just an air filter. If you had a PCIII and tuned for it, it'd help a lot more.

clean and recharge the one you got or the one your getting????
CBRclassic 08-16-2009, 02:31 AM Did you get a foam element one ?
The main thing with the foam ones to remembers is , that if you use the wrong oil in them:icon_doh: , or over oil them:icon_doh: , they can and will make your bike run differently and even sometimes make them run like chit ..
Use the correct spray oil and never over do it ...http://www.cbr-riders.com/forum/images/smilies/smiley20.gif
of course all that is if you bought a foam element one ?? :icon_shrug:
K7inne09 08-16-2009, 08:11 AM Got it! um Im not sure if it is foam element or not didnt pay enough attention although i probably should have, part # was just Ha-6001 i believe ....i saw it on ebay new for 30$ + S&H so i figured it was a decent buy cause i know that they run near $50-$60 elsewhere....will i have to readjust the Fuel/Air mixture with this new filter?
K7inne09 08-16-2009, 08:16 AM Thanks again for you help guys! on this long slow process of learning about motorcycles. I know a bit about cars but i just dont trust myself enough with my bike thats why every little piece of info counts... I seem to have this mild scare that if i screw up one small minor thing on my bike her and I are gunna be sliding down some pavement and I do my best to avoid that lol but thanks again the help here is great!

It will depend to some degree on how she is setup now and what altitude you are at plus what temp the region you are in gets up to and down to..
Chances are that she will run fine , but if she feels like you have lost power or she runs too lean ( a spark plug color check will determine that ) ... yer you will have to re set the air mixtures ..
Wait and see what sort you have ordered .... if its a foam one that needs to be oiled , just follow the instructions and give it a try ...
You wont go and kill anything or yourself mate ...so don't stress ...

umm my K&N isnt form and requires oil ;)
then again, my dino isnt as old as your dinos are ;)
CBRclassic 08-16-2009, 09:01 AM Yer , ok , we can amuse that he has bought the latest versions ... LOL
The new ones are actually cotton layered form that is still wire meshed , and need the same attention as the older foam element ones as far as the the oil goes ...:)

:icon_wink: yea when I think foam, I think of the outer covers we used on sand rails :)
or lawn mowers lol
CBRclassic 08-16-2009, 09:19 AM Yer , I do remember them well ......my old XL trail bike had a K&N foam rap around cover style one ...they were fair dinkum pricks if you over soaked them in oil :-(
K7inne09 08-17-2009, 08:22 AM Well it's definitely good to know and have some reassurance im not gunna go kill myself! Thanks again for all of your help guys as soon as it comes ill be on here posting what we are working with and the procedure!! Thanks!
grumps91gt 08-18-2009, 10:01 PM Not to hijack this thread, but I just found out my bike has a K&N in it.
Gonna pull it out and clean it.

Confidence is key. Don't ride paranoid.

Paranoid who you talking to. What who said that. There after me again. Darn those gremlins and there tools. I will get them some day you just wait. I will catch one. LOL :D
K7inne09 08-20-2009, 08:07 AM So the Air filter came brand spanking new in the K&N box and when I opened it the filter is in a presealed plastic cover that Reads "Factory PRE-OILED Ready to Install" So im guestimating its a "plug and play" i dont have to do anything other than install....am i correct to this assumption?
CBRclassic 08-20-2009, 08:14 AM Yup ....http://www.cbr-riders.com/forum/images/smilies/smiley20.gif
You prolly will need to buy a can of the K&N spray oil to service it at the recommended intervals though ....but she is fine to go at the start mate ....
johnnyx 08-20-2009, 08:14 AM Yes, just drop it in and reassemble the bike. You probably won't even notice a difference in performance, so don't worry about having it take off on you and throw you off a cliff. This isn't any kind of major upgrade. In most cases it adds no performance increase, it just pays for itself in that you can clean it and reuse it.
K7inne09 08-20-2009, 04:44 PM lol i know its nothing major it was like 30$ couldnt pass it up i know we wont go cliff jumping haha i just need to get over the whole freaking out sh*t... yeah ill get some K&N to service up but awesome..Thanks to all for your input!
johnnyx 08-21-2009, 09:50 AM Think of it this way: Honda considers it User Maintenence. That means they purposely made it easy for people who are NOT bike mechanics to do.
tangboy 08-24-2009, 12:51 PM I have been checking around and where is the dang air filter on the 01 F4i? (Yeah I'm a newb!)
2H company 08-24-2009, 12:56 PM The air filter is under the tank
tangboy 08-24-2009, 01:01 PM K that's what I thought, do you have to remove the tank or just the fairings?
2H company 08-24-2009, 01:15 PM You need to lift the tank only. Just read the whole thread, all questions are pretty much answered.
tangboy 08-24-2009, 02:06 PM Which whole thread? I read through this one... or are you talking about a DIY post on another thread?
johnnyx 08-24-2009, 03:00 PM Remove the side fairings
remove the seat
remove the tank
open the airbox
swap filter
repeat in reverse.
Not counting fairing and airbox screws, it's like 4 bolts.
Zero1080 08-24-2009, 10:39 PM Ok, does anyone else have a hose that connects to the gas tank that is damn near impossible to get back in when putting the tank back on, cause it's too short, and the opening on the tube is too small? May just be me, but i was takin my tank off and stopped cause i didn't think I'd be able to get it back on.
F4ith 08-25-2009, 01:07 AM Which whole thread? I read through this one... or are you talking about a DIY post on another thread?
Try this one. Found it in one of these threads and I've used it all. Props to ShraZ for making it. I wished he got the spark plugs though. I just paid for the installation on that. Didn't have the stupid tool!

Are you talking about the vent and overflow tubes? One is thinner than the other but they should fit fine in their respective slot. I forgot which is which but I believe there should be 2 tubes on the bottom. At least I remember there were when I changed my air filter. Both tubes should extend to the bottom right fairing I believe? Could be left, can't recall at the moment.
Zero1080 08-25-2009, 01:44 AM I've found the ones that run all the way down. They fit on the fairing fine. But there's a very small tube that is about 2-3 inches long, off the gas tank, that goes into a plastic neck at a 45 degree angle. It was totally dry when I disconnected it, and it almost seems like a worthless part. I'm gonna ask the dealer tomorrow when I go.

It is item 23 to 42.
