View Full Version : Seeking wisdom from the group
jaycal 06-28-2009, 12:52 PM Hello All
I'm really liking some deals I've seen for some '88 CBR 1000's in the local classifieds. I liked the bikes when they first came out, though I was to young to afford one then. Now I'm much older and they are much less expensive, and I still love the look.
I'm 6'6" @ 220lbs.
Any info on the bike, would greatly be appreciated.
Specific problems with that year?
Recalls or required upgrades I should look for?
Fit issues with my height?
Years for motor/parts compatability?
Ruff mileage before engine work if it was maintained properly?
Thanks in advance for any info.

Shadow 06-29-2009, 08:56 AM 1 No bullet proof
2 No
3 Maybe a taller screen
4 Look in the technical section at the top of the Hurricane page.
5 Hard to say, mine's had a couple of camchains in 50000 miles
Have a look at the general posts over the past few months or do a search.
Welcome to the Forum
(there's a workshop manual up in tach section too)
Cheers

kilgoretrout 06-29-2009, 09:56 AM Welcome to the forums!
Like shadow said, no particular issues with the '88 and these bikes are pretty dam tough.
Cam Chain tensioner was a weak spot on most, less so on the newer years as they have a newer design that is a bit better. Rattles around on start-up, but should quiet down after warmup.
Most bikes are the same through all the years, but their are differences such as fairings, wheels, etc. on the newer (92+) ones.
As far as your size, I'm about 6'3" and weigh about 220 also. I have no problem with this bike at all.
jaycal 06-30-2009, 05:46 PM Thanks for the info. Hopefully in the next month or so I will have some picts of a new to me Hurricane. Have read through several posts already and will continue to do so. Info on these forums is priceless, especially if your a want to me mechanic (do it yourself'r) like I am.

hawkwind 06-30-2009, 06:19 PM These are great bikes , no real problems and size shouldn't be an issue unless you have like a 50 inch inside leg!
kilgoretrout 06-30-2009, 07:22 PM Yep, what hawk said. You shouldn't have any problems.
Keep us updated on how you make out if you get one.. :)
Griffin 07-02-2009, 05:42 PM As said above. I've got 30,000 km on mine with no engine work ever.
I'm 6'4" and 230 lbs. I have long legs (36" inseam) and I dropped the pegs an inch by using Buell Lightning pegs. Requires a small amount of grinding to get them to fit but I love em.

TimBucTwo 07-11-2009, 07:12 PM Hello All

So does everyone else. There are many tines when I am asked what year mine is (’94) and the person can’t believe it. They almost always say, “Wow! I thought it was new or only a few years old.”
The technology in bikes has not changed much since these bikes came out. Fuel injection is the biggest change. The sport bikes are more compact, lighter and quicker in the more recent years. The CBR1000F is an iron horse that can pull just about any wagon or can be ridden bare back.
williamcollishaw 07-11-2009, 07:50 PM I prefer how I sit "in" my 88 as the way I feel on a newer bike.At 5'11" and 240lbs. it looks like a bear on a circus bike to see me ride a new 600!Now if that tensioner would just show up so's I can get back on the road!!!
kilgoretrout 07-11-2009, 10:13 PM william, I know how you feel. I wanted a 6rr for a while until I sat on one. Not that they're bad bikes, because they aren't. In fact, I could probably get used to it, but it's such a change from the 'Cane. It feels so tiny!
I'm about 6'2" and 225lbs, maybe...
Just like you said....a bear on a circus bike... lol..
:D:D

I wonder what that does to the gas mileage!?
CBRclassic 07-12-2009, 10:32 PM Fuel consumption prolly measured by the meters per gal , not miles .. sheesh!!
and how about tire wear??? :icon_doh: ...
ouch!!... those poor bloody tires :icon_no:
Sprock 07-13-2009, 04:25 PM Yeah but apparently this feller lets call him "Richard", shall we, has a really neat "auto pilot feature" so he can ride hands free and eat Big Mac's all at the same time
sawnee 07-13-2009, 04:33 PM Richards ass has grown over the saddle so it is now part of him and when he farts it is methane injection straight into the carb
350bhp at the flat rear tyre :icon_bike:
