So I went on another group ride with BARF last week, and one of the guys on a 600RR, I noticed he was shifting without the use of his clutch for a majority of the ride. He taught me how to do it, and I can do it fairly well now, but sometimes I'll still look like an idiot trying to do it if it doesn't work, but I was wondering...is there any advantage/disadvantage to shifting without using the clutch? (i notice that it doesn't engine brake as well) Is it good/bad for the tranny? (that's my main concern if it is hurting or not hurting the tranny)

Please advise so I don't mess it up, forcing me to spend money to fix it..haha

Shifting without the clutch is like dancing with an ugly girl ... sure you can do it and it probably won't hurt anything but why would ya want to?

Just remember upshift clutchless only. When downshifting you really should use the clutch to avoid issues later on down the road.

I only shift without the clutch going up and at harder accelerations. I've played around with normal up and down shifting without the clutch, but it always takes a lot to try and rev match, plus I catch myself thinking about it too much and taking my attention away from the possible idiots on the road. No thanks!

I tried it a bit, prefer not to get into the habit of not clutching though.

Yeah, seems like it doesn't do much harm. I just do it sometimes just to see if I can or not. Aken, I'll have to try it just doing a hard acceleration to see what it does

I upshift clutchless usually when I am just too lazy to pull the clutch in, like when I am sitting upright and only have a hand on the throttle (usually just cruising and lower RPMs). I always use the clutch when downshifting. I only upshift clutchless about 5-10% of the time. I have just gotten use to using the clutch most of the time.

I use the clutch all the time, I see no real advantage by not squeezing the clutch in every time...

I do it (upshift) when I'm screaming at redline, but never normal riding or downshifting.

clutchless shifting is faster,so for street racing purposes(on a closed course) its the way to go.

no one has really answered my question though haha, is it bad for the tranny?

if done correctly it won't hurt your tranny

i prefer the dynojet quick shift kit though, don't even have to let off the throttle

It is worse for the tranny because no matter how good you are at rev matching you will inevitably grind a bit every so often. There is also a lot more stress put on the shift fork. Most bikes require the cases to be split to get to those goodies so not a fun day. This is not to say the occasional upshift without the clutch will ruin your bike ... but it is harder on the tranny than using the clutch for all shifts.

What some fail to realize is that pros being paid to race have crews that magically replace all the parts they abuse during a weekend jaunt on a closed course. If you're out running a bullet on the street and every 1/10th sec counts then do what ya gotta

Haha, Yeah I get what you're saying chain. IMO, i'd rather shift with clutch, more reliable...oh yeaaaa

If it was a "good" idea to not use the clutch...Don't ya think the engineers would have elminated the clutch altogether. Just think of all the money they'd save, and all the money they'd make...replacing trannies.

I do it, just like uniqsol said. Only when you're cruising, and going one handed, and the laziness kicks in. I only do it otherwise @ high rpm's cause the lurches are killing me.

i'll just do it occasionaly, laziness seems to kick in more often now because of the heat...damn heat!

I usually upshift clutchless all the time.
For me its always a smoother shift than when using the clutch
