I brought home a '97 CBR600 last night from Ft. Worth TX (260+miles) ride. It ran great with no issues to speak of. I did notice a very faint buzzing sound at 35-45mph. Below that or above it, the sound disappeared. I think a bolt on the fairing might be loose, but no big deal. I was very surprised at my gas mileage. Prior to this bike, I rode an '87 VFR 700F2 and mpg was about 39-41 cruising at 75mph. The CBR got 55.6 mph at the same speed! What are you guys and gals getting from your F3? It is completely stock other than the D&D pipe. This thing is awesome. It weighs about 60+lbs less than the VFR and makes about 35+ HP more. I can really feel the difference too. Well, off to spend some much needed time with mama. Must score some brownie points if I want to ride it later today. Later.

 

i only get 30-33 mpg

but thats with aggressiving riding, and a leaky pet **** >=[ i used to get 40 before the leak issue. i do only city riding though so im sure it would be more if i commuted more

 

30-35mpg if I ride aggressively. 40+mpg if I ride...who am I kidding. I always ride aggresivly.

 

I did about 500 miles highway this weekend going at a significant pace and got about 50/55 mpg. (we're not talking 70 mph, haha) City commuting I'm usually between 40/45 mpg, it's my daily driver. Aggressive twisties its usually 30+ mpg.

 

I did a cross country trip a couple years ago and I getting about 50 - 65 mpg. The big variation is because I was drafting semis. So I would get about 60 - 65 drafting and 50 - 55 if I wasn't drafting. It's kinda funny, you wouldn't think that drafting would save that much fuel but it really does!

On the inside of the windshield on the left and right are small covers held in place by 1 screw. The lower ends are just slipped into slots and have some foam padding around them. You might be hearing a buzzing or vibration coming from them. Try adding a little more foam packing behind them to quiet them down. I've seen the fuse cover make a similar noise, but not as loud or as often. None of these things are critical, just little anoying.

Mythbusters tested the effiency of drafting a semi. If you can stay 8 feet behind you can get up to 14% better fuel economy.

 

Thanks for the insight folks. I'm having a blast riding the CBR, but it is a bit different than the VFR 700 I had. The CBR floats at 70-80mph and accerates with ease beyond that. The VFR took forever to get to the same speeds. The clutch is "softer" too. By that I mean, I don't have to pull it in all the way before shifting like I had to on the VFR. Do you folks use a thottle lock or speed control for highway use on your CBR? Thanks again for your insight. Later.
