Since several people around here have mentioned guns, I figured I'd share my other hobby (next to the cane, of course), and see who else shares my interests.
I started shooting at a very young age, and used to hunt a lot. I don't hunt so much anymore, but still get my license every year and go out a couple times.
However, I'm a member of a hunting/fishing club and can be found on the pistol and rifle ranges quite regularly. I've got a little collection of guns, and was wondering if anyone else here shares my "other" hobby.
Here's a pic of one I bought a couple months ago. It's a Springfield Mil-Spec SS 1911A1. I put some custom dalmation ebony grips on it, just to make it stand out a bit:
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/protectedbyglock/dalebonygripsL.jpg
And here's a Bushmaster Patrolman's M4 I picked up for fun. It's much more accurate than I expected. I use it mainly for range plinking and varmint shooting. I also have a Colt 6721 that is similar:
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/protectedbyglock/bushyM4-1.jpg
I'm currently looking for a 4" SS Ruger GP100 in .357mag because I'm lacking in the wheel-gun department.
So, who likes to shoot? :)
Also, if anybody with a 'cane in PA (or near me) who likes to ride AND shoot... maybe we can get together for a ride and a range trip!! :)

Mr. Trout.... You should move to Nevada for sure. This state is called the "Silver State", but it should be called the "Gun State." I have a few guns and I too use to hunt. My hunting rifles have always been bolt action, clip loaded rifles.
I own an 8" barrel .44 Mag revolver, .38 police special revolver, 9mm Glock 17, .22 revolver (snake shot only), 18 " barrel pump 12 ga, over and under 12 ga, .308 bolt action, .22 bolt action and a few others that the law tried to outlaw.;)
I don't own weapons as nice as yours. That is a sweet piece you have. Mine have always been for "tossing" if need be... Not to say they are junk, they are not. Just lower name brands kept in very good condition. All of them have a story behind them. I collect "Story Pieces", I guess you could say. The Glock is from a riding brother who hit a deer at night, landed in the on-coming lane, was knocked out for about 1/2 an hour, sat up and got smashed my a car! They will burn me with that one!!! I buy stories..... Not the car drivers fault, black leathers blend into a black road at night in the desert....
Nevada is made up of a lot of BLM land (Bureau of Land Management), so going out and shooting is free and close. There are a lot of people out this way that have M-16, M4, AR-15, AK-47, Mac10, etc...
You would get along well with my brother-in-law. Pure gun person! Has 4 gun cabinets full and his prize piece is a .50 cal, 5 shot ss revolver. He uses that to deer hunt with!!!:D We call him "Dirty Jerry" after Clint Eastwood's old movie Dirty Harry....:) I wouldn't mind getting one of those, but they are about $1,000 right now...
P.S. I like bolt action rifles. Less shots means more patience on the hunter's end.

Nevada, I own many guns, these are just a couple... :)
I have many bolt guns and shotguns, too. The two above are just my most recent additions to the collection. We can't hunt with semi-autos here in PA, except for "hunting" varmints and such.
I've been shooting trap for years, too. I don't really have a dedicated SXS trap gun anymore, but use longer pump guns. I used to shoot for a nearby team, but... well... I quit because I was dating the daughter of one of the club's "higher ups" and it didn't really work out (to say the least :D)
I think I'm gonna join my current club's team soon, though. They are just a bit intimidating because they were winning tournaments all last year, so they must be pretty darn good.
I've always heard there was some good shooting out in your area.
Mike, just for your information...
that's a nice rifle! :D
I have a few similar set-ups. I have a Rem700 in 30-06 that's a good shooter!

My shooter is a Remmington 788 bolt action, .308 cal.... Funny, we have a lot in common.
I have not hunted here in Nevada. There are a lot of Antelope out here and they can run 50 mph (rode beside one on my former Sportster, while he was paralleling the highway). A lot of big mule deer and of course grouse, quail, dove, wild pigeon. I haven't seen any wild boar, but I heard they are around.
P.S. My family is from PA. Mother and father were born and raised in Farrell/Sharpsville PA. One of my brothers lives in Hubbard, Ohio (close by). My uncles, aunts and cousins live in Sharon, PA. Since I have over 60 cousins, there are a lot living in the S.F. bay area, CA. also....

Nevada, I like the Rem 788, too. Never had the chance to shoot one. Nice guns, though!
That's funny you have family where you do. My immediate family lives in south central PA (like me), but all the rest live up north. I was born in Greenville, PA and all my family is from Erie, Meadville, Youngsville, Warren area! I've been to Sharon many times, as well as every other town you listed! My dad was born in Youngsville, and my mom in Meadville. They met at Edinboro University. I've been to a lot of Cleveland, Ohio sporting events (mostly Indians, some Browns).
I also have an Uncle that just moved from S.F. to Martinez, CA a couple of years ago. Ever heard of See's candies? That's my great, great, great grandmother! :)
We just visited my uncle in SF 2 summers ago and made our way down through AZ, NV, etc. Very different world for sure!

Have I heard of See's Candies? My mom, God rest her soul, gave us kids a box of See's candies and a $100 bill for the last 15 years of her life at Christmas!
My sister lived in Martinez for a few years. I worked in Benicia for a few years, which is across the bridge from Martinez. I know that area well.
If you are ever out this way, let me know. We could go to the Bucket of Blood Saloon and get you a coffee or Mt. Dew or if you are up to it a White Russian or a Jagermeister (we'll toast SwisherRed with a Jager).:D
I like chocolate beers also. Rum? No, but I can bring my buddy who was born in Puerto Rico and he is a big Rum drinker! Big 6'8" 300 lbs of all muscle. My brother in-law would be with us too. Big Frank is so tall he has to duck to get in the door way and he is 350 lbs. Ex-Hell's Angel (yah right ex? haha..). Those two will carry us out if we need it after all that Mt. Dew!!!:D
P.S. Is that a real picture of your great, great, great grandmother on the box of See's?
kilgoretrout
04-23-2009, 02:07 PM
Yep, I'm pretty sure that's her on the box. Same pictures in the factory. My last name is See, by the way. Never knew her, obviously, but plenty after her! Last I checked, there were only like 2800 See's in the US. Not sure of the number now. You know that famous "I love Lucy" episode in the candy factory? That was the factory.
My grandparents lived in Irvine, CA for years, too.
Martinez is a beautiful area! We took a ride down RT1 while we were there. I liked the Bolinas area a lot. I generally hate hippie types, but something about loose dogs and open cases of Red Tail Ale makes me happy. :)
If I'm ever out that way, I'll definately look you up. I can drink the hell out of some Jager. (and White Russians, too, for that matter.... the Dude Abides...got any creamer?) :D:D
Well, a gun thread took a strange turn...
Sounds like you're a regular carrier. I know I am. I've fallen for the whole "pocket gun" trend here lately. I used to carry strictly glocks and the occasional Smith M&P9C, but here lately I've been lazy just slipping a little LCP in my pocket. Neat little .380, really.. just so small!
Everybody is getting crazy over the presidential scare here lately. I'm glad I reload! Or should I say... I'm glad I reload and was stocked up before this happened. Primers are just flying off the shelves. Freakin' craziness! Same with ammo..
CBRriderNevada
04-23-2009, 04:31 PM
I have not been following the politics of gun ownership lately. I figure that I have enough ammo to do what 10 people need to do...
I came from California where if you owned a gun everyone thought you were a wild crazy person (they were right in my case!). Here in Nevada, if you don't own a gun everyone thinks you are crazy - go figure...
To get a concealed weapons permit in California, it took an act of God. Here, you just have to take a one day course and shot 10 rounds into the hillside. You also have to promise to defend the country from invaders. It is goofy, but I promise to keep the Barbarian invaders out of our stores, or whatever they want... Promise!!:D
This state is real liberal with gun laws. The sheriff down the street (yes, ex-special forces so I know him) said that after 20 years of military special forces and only 5 years as a deputy sheriff, he would rather leave people in Nevada alone than try to force them to do something. I had to ask why.... He said, "Cause they shoot your a.s out here Joe!"
P.S. The New Zealand Brothers might know my relative - same name as mine Joseph Babich - winemaker and winery owner.

I'm sure I'll have one some day, I've been looking at the savage. I already have several 22s, and the .223rnd seems to fit the bill for the longer shots (with a little more knockdown), so the 17 hasn't really found a niche for me yet. I actually carry all the time. I got a little pocket gun for the situation...
Here's a pic. It's a Ruger LCP. It's a 380ACP, that holds 7rnds. The gun itself weighs only about 9oz! Real easy to carry anywhere. Slips right in any pocket!

It should penetrate glass. I always carry full metal jacket in it for penetration.
I also have a compact 9mm. It's a Smith&Wesson MP9C pictured here(bottom right...with a couple more of my babies...glock 21, glock 22, springer XD9, and the Mil-Spec in the middle)Sorry for the crappy pic, but it's all I have at the moment.

Oh, and shadow... sounds like you've got the idea... :)
I need to get a good O/U shotgun or a SXS for the upcoming trap season.
I don't have an AK, only an SKS. Pretty much the same philosophy, though.
I've also had my fair share of semi auto 22s. I had a tube-fed model 60 (Marlin) for YEARS, but I sold it to a buddy for like $75 to fund a Remington Viper 522. That was a big mistake. The Viper was a total POS. It just looked "cooler" to me at the time. I traded the Viper on a shotgun, but then bought a Mossberg 702. It''s been a good little gun, but I want my tube-fed marlin back. They still make them, but I heard quality is a little spottier. :(
They do make it in stainless now, though... so I'm looking into it.
Right now, I'm leaning towards revolvers. I want a Ruger GP100 4" SS bad (in .357mag). That way, I can shoot the 38SPL round through it for practice and cost and still have the mag for more hardcore situations. :)
(you're right about the 50 getting the job done. Maybe one day, I'll have one just because....well...it's a 50cal!)

Sir Trout, your mind has gone gunny! I like when someone has a very passionate view of their interest in life. Guns are your "fever" in life as motorcycles are mine. Being passionate in whatever you do or have in life is what keeps you sane.... I enjoyed the pictures and liked that little 7 round, 9 oz puppy. That is a perfect carrying piece. I carry a snub nose 38 special, 5 shot revolver, that is smaller than my hand by far. Short hand grip so it is front heavy for recoil, I guess.
A gun dealer in Napa, CA. (Napa Gun Exchange) sold that 38 special to my mom when she had a brain tumor and was thinking weird. She was at the point where she would try to light her cigarettes with a tooth pick!!! She had never held a gun in her life, let alone shot one. Perfectly legal to sell a hand gun to someone like her!!! So, she is gone and I have a gun registered to a dead person (she died 11 years ago)....;)

It's true nevada, and thanks!
I've often thought about going the revolver route for carry, but autos have gotten so reliable over the years.
Interesting story about your moms. Not sure I would sell in that situation, but you got a nice piece out of the deal!
I do love my guns... :)
I've been shooting all my life. I got my first pellet gun at the age of about 5yrs, and my dad let me shoot that Ithaca 20ga around 7 or 8. I never cared about recoil one bit. I remember some of my friends (even 10-12yrs old) that I would want to share my toys with... only to have them go home crying to their mommies. :D:D
It's one of those things that you just love. You can't really even help it. Nailing a perfect shot at several hundred yards or shooting your first perfect trap set. It's just awesome. I mean, I shot that old '48 Ithaca as much as I could from day 1. I started reloading shells by 13 or 14 and would use my allowance to buy shot, wads, and clays. :D
It turned into an extension of my body, no joke..
I remember the first time I shot against someone in a trap shoot. He was an old man with this hella nice silver and gold side by side. I beat him, and he only missed one bird near the end. He turns to me and says "You know, you're not supposed to be shooting 20ga. We're shooting 12s"
I didn't even think about what I was shooting, but looking back, I beat his ass good!! (he must have been hot) :D:D
I have a feeling that if I had more cash, though, I'd be just as into bikes. I always had bikes growing up, too. In fact, here's a pic of my first one....I was maybe 9 or 10. I've got my sisters helping me clean her up. As you can see, I've always been a Honda guy.... :D
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q258/protectedbyglock/FirstHonda.jpg
Lately, I've really been interested in getting back into bikes more. I find myself looking through the paper all the time, and thinking about buying those $500 beaters I find, just to fix them up and run 'em. ;)
CBRriderNevada

Sir Trout my brother, leave the old beaters for the junk man. I did that a few years ago. It is a money pit and it is not worth it. I even tried to buy the "classic" type bikes (no not you CBRclassic) and restore them to make some money. Lost thousands of dollars on those puppies. Probably more like $20,000 on restorations! But, the people who got the restored bikes liked them.
Take this old man's advice, leave those beaters to the junk man!:D
Even if you get them cheap, they will cost 10 times the initial price in time and labor. You like nice things (by the looks of your guns and bike) so getting a beater would make you unhappy in the long run. Or poor like the beaters tried to make me!

Mr Classic and Sir Trout, I just want you to know an update. I am now in charge of rather large mall and one of my jobs is security. Well, we had our first meeting about guns. Nevada is an OPEN CARRY state, so as long as the gun is shown, it is legal to carry it. Now private owners can ask you to leave, but the law can not take your gun from you. So, we were looking at having security ask people with 500 caliber revolvers (just an example gun only) to leave the property. BUT, Scheels is one of our tenents and they sell guns and buy guns from people. So, we had to just restrict the gun carrying to the Scheels's imediate area.
I can see it now. California people at the mall and a person walks in with a pistol strapped on their hip. It is going to be interesting!!
So, Sir Trout, you are still young. Move to Nevada where guns are not only appreciated, but those without guns are asked to leave this state!!!:D So, Mr Classic as the song asks, "Hey, Joe where you goin' with that gun in your hand?" My answer is "To the Mall..." There has got to be some fish in those fountains to shoot at!!!:D:cool:

That is a badass arsenal right there, steve. I like the big pink and purple glittery one with the yellow pump!
It amazes me how non-gun looking they make these things nowadays. First the stupid little orange plug in the end (that we all ripped out in the first minute of gunplay), and now they all look like guns the goshdam tooth fairy would carry. :D
Nevada, that is truly awesome. We have the same kind of laws here in PA. We are an open carry state, too. You only need a license to conceal a gun, and a private property owner (business) can only ask you to leave. You better dam well leave their property, though, or face some criminal charges. Nevada sounds even a little better, though. However, Alaska is the greatest ever. I bet those clowns from the Republic of Kalifornia do about shlt bricks when they visit you guys...:D
Now that you are mall security, you need to study the great writings of the infamous gecko45. He is an internet legend in the online gun community....The original "Mall Ninja" if you will.....

I will die before I will give up my weapons! I believe every person who carries a gun keeps criminals from taking over the area. The criminals have to think twice before going after a victim when people carry guns. To get a concealed weapons permit, it only takes a one day class and a target shooting hour. That is it. I carry a concealed weapon whether it is legal or not. I am just not going to let some law tell me how to run my life. It is my life, not the darn government's life. Government is a concept and not anything more. Concepts do not run my life. Period...

Yep, you're right Nevadaman. I always carry, too. I'll be dammed if some criminal is gonna walk all over me because of law. Don't get me wrong, the law in this state is actually pretty good, but I know many states that the poor law-abiding citizen is an easy target. I don't know why the government insists on limiting the rights of the good citizen in some of these states. It is downright dangerous and counterproductive. First glaring example I can think of is maryland (because it's 10mins away from me). If I enter that state, I'm not allowed to legally carry (they won't give you a permit). You can tell it's a no carry zone, too, because the criminals are much more brazen. They have no fear of being stopped. They run the show, have guns illegally anyway, and they know it.
Crime in good carry states is less, and yet the antis ignore the facts.
My sister was mugged a couple years ago. Thank god they just stole her purse and her cell and money and did no harm to her. She's a liberal dem, and didn't understand why anyone would want to carry. She's starting to understand a little better after that ordeal. Criminals are not going away, and neither are guns. I think the least we can do is keep a level playing field for the "good guys".
There are other reasons for us keeping armed, too, but I'll save you all the extra rant. :)
I have to go to work.
The only other thing I'll say is that the average good guy carrying knows what carry and the right to bear arms is all about, and is simply levelling the playing field for himself and his family. There are very few people in my life that even know I carry. It's not about being cool, it's about being protected just in case. My state (for the time being) is holding on to laws that protect the constitution, and I'm greatful for that, but not complacent. In order to get a carry pemit in this state, you fill out a form and pay your $20. It's a right. But it's up to the people to preserve that right.

I was stationed at Ft Meade, MD. Are you near the chocolate factory that I believe is moving or moved to Mexico? Hersheys.... I liked that area of the country, but filled with ticks when you go in the woods. We don't have ticks or fleas out here. I also have yet to see a mosquito...
I realize that some people believe that the government is here to protect and defend them, but the government is also here to CONTROL them. You learn on thing in the military that should stick with all soldiers. "You are only controlled by yourself." If you don't want to be controlled, you are not. You just have consequences that may be final in life.
This is where the Hindu thinking in life is good. Hey, come back as a cow and no one eats you!!:D If you have the belief that once you die, you come back to complete things, you can never be controlled nor can you give anything up in life since life itself is all you have.... No finality, no worries...
Sir Trout, as you get older, you will feel less able to defend yourself physically. Years ago, if I got into trouble with 3 strong dudes, I just went for it (heck, I had years of training so those 3 were at a disadvantage - watch the movie Presidio with Sean Connary). Now, I would need a gun to go for it!

I really liked my few visits out west, though. We've talked about moving out that direction, and my boss is gonna let me know of any possible transfers to the area.
You are dead on about control. What has always amazed me in this country is how people just go along with it. I mean, even obvious BS laws. Everybody just kind of shrugs it off and accepts it as part of life. Well, it's not. Crooked politicians just straight up lie to the masses to get somewhere and then do whatever they feel like and people accept it.
It's crazy. I think people are just too dam tired from working all the time to put up a fight...:D

Yep, Sir Trout, they are tired, but there is one thing that always brings a government to its end. That is the economy. When people no longer can eat at Mickey Ds and sit in front of a TV after sitting at a desk all day, they will realize that life isn't so easy. America is Easy Street for the general masses. There are those who starve and those who lay in jail, but the mass majority just have it easy. Until that changes, laws will just get more restrictive. Why? "The meek shall inherit the earth" is why..... The strong die for a cause while the meek hide and wait it out.... Are the meek smart? No, not really. They just have no passion in life for life.....:D Let's just label them Drones!
I remember spending some time in the field in MD. I woke up one night with about 100 ticks crawling all over me. "Lovely" is all I could say!!! That is where I learned how to get ticks out without a problem. Just rub them in a circular motion. Put your finger on top of them and rub in a circle until they fall off. I use to do that with my dogs too. Now, I just live in the desert and I don't have to worry about blood suckers, except politicians!!!:D

Nevada, I couldn't have said it any better. You are absolutely correct, my man... and I've said the same thing many times.
There is even some of that going on now!
As far as ticks, I had a similar experience last summer. I was working in a control panel at a pump station. I was sitting on a manhole cover in the woods wiring up some flow controls when I happened to look down and I was covered in ticks. Apparently, they had nested somewhere nearby, and they were crawling everywhere like ants!! Crazy feeling, isn't it! Not much fun, really.
That's an interesting way to remove them, btw.. I've never tried that. I always just grab 'em real close and rip them.
CBRriderNevada
05-10-2009, 07:21 PM
Well, Sir Trout, you could rip them out then shot the little buggers!:D No, next time you or a dog gets a tick bedded in, just rub them in any circular motion until they fall out. If you rip them, you can leave the head, then you have to dig that sucker out with a pin or knife end. Just rub, rub, rub, rub with a little bit of pressure (not a lot just enough to make their arse move in a circle. Some come out in a few circles and others take a minute or two for them to fall out. If they are full, they fall out in less than 10 seconds with their little fricking heads just looking at you like, "What the heck do you think you are doing?" Thats when you throw them on the fire and listen to them "pop" just for fun!:D
I learned not to sleep under a tree during a thunderstorm because all the tick fall out of the tree onto you! I learned what deer beds look like so I don't put my arse in one of those because of all the ticks and I learned that the desert has no ticks so it is good to live tickless in the desert!

Living in the UK I can't even say the word Gnu without my door being kicked in
See, that would be weird for me. I carry every day.
I mean, what do you do when you need to open a can of beer? Or how do you shut off a lamp when you don't feel like getting up to turn it off? :)
My dad made a trip to China last year, and when he returned he said that the first night at dinner, all the guys over there wanted to talk to him about guns. My dad said that first they wanted to know if he had guns. Once he said "yes", they wanted to know how many people he had killed!
He got quite a kick out oof this. He kept trying to explain to them that he doesn't kill people with them, but they just kept saying "Well then why do you have them??"
I know this story doesn't exactly apply to the UK, etc... but it does show how different many countries view the whole gun thing...

Good question Rod. The difference between where you live and here in the USA, is our constitution has the second ammendment that provides the difference between our country and all others. It is our right to bear arms so that the government can not ever grow so bold as to totally control us. You gave up the only method of keeping the government from totally controlling you when you gave up your guns. Our founding fathers knew that England had that problem and made the US Constitution give every person the right to keep not only the government at arm's length, but also criminals at arm's length. Choice is what it comes down to since one has the choice to protect one's self here in the USA.
Yes, the old, young and weak must rely on the police for protection, but really, how many times has a cop been there at the exact moment you need them to stop the thug? Too late!!! Thug 1, victim 0.... By having a gun, you have a chance at least.... Without a gun, Thug 1, victim 0... Thugs have guns or big muscles so little old ladies will lose most of the time anyway, but I am not a little old lady and do not rely on the police to be my protectors. The police are here as tax collector enforcement!
So Rod it is a matter of choice and belief. I spent 10 years in the military some of which was at war in Viet Nam. I fought for my country's belief and part of that belief is the Constitution under which this country was founded. I was willing to die for the right to bear arms. I am still willing to die to keep that right and if it were to mean turning against a controlling government who turns on its people, then I will follow through with making some of the government "THUGS" die earning a buck.
Rod, you gave up your last means of stopping agression against you when you and your countrymen gave up their weapons. Your government now can walk in and take whatever they want with no means for resistance to form against them. That means a rich man can now get your politican to do the dirty work and take over all of you little people. Robin Hood is famous for challenging the local government and without weapons, he would not have stood a chance....
I like to think of my choice to protect myself through bearing arms as my final act of freedom. Also, the Japanese did not attack any further than Hawaii because it would be suicide to attack a country where every citizen has a gun aimed at your troops! Viet Nam taught the big old US government a lesson on weapons and the willingness to die for a cause - taught the French the same lesson before the US government....
Tell me Rod, now that your citizens no longer have guns, did your cops give them up too??? NO, I think not.... Cops 1, citizens 0.... Final act of freedom = gone....
Maybe Bill Gates can now own his own country... He can now buy your imprisonment without resistance.... Guns give the little guy a chance in life over those with money, power and bigger muscles...
Here is a thought Rod. If you were out in the country (as a robber) and there was a farm house that you thought you could rob. Would you think the old farmer just might have a gun to stop you? Now if you knew, he had no guns would you care about the possible final act of self perservation by the farmer? See? Guns make even the boldest thug think about going into the city instead of the farm country. Why? Because cities have gun laws that restrict people's access to guns! Since cities require a "concealed weapons permit", that says to thugs "no visible gun = NO defense." Thugs can use a knife to get you, but if you produce a gun in his face Thug 0, victim 1....
P.S. As it is said, "God created man and Smith & Wesson made man equal." Big muscles? Bigger caliber gun!
otr002
05-12-2009, 05:28 AM
Ok thanks for the US history lesson. I think i missed the mark there, we still have the right to own weapons and also the right to protect ourselves from aggression. We also have a political system that controls the government and stops exploitation. We just don't allow the general public to own military style weapons and it is illegal to carry a concealed weapon.
So why is there a need to own military style weapons, is it because you fear your government that much that you feel the need to protect yourself from them? or? and what's so threatening at work or in a restaurant that requires 9mm of protection?

I like the line "If plan A involves taking multiple .338Lapua shots to the back, you should probably think about a plan B" :D
There are countless others, but that one was on the top of my head.
As far as your thoughts on guns/crime etc. I understand what you're saying. I'm active on several other gun related boards, and believe me when I say you aren't the first person I've spoken to on this subject. I appreciate the fact that you at least have some intelligent thought behind what you say. My sister, as I've mentioned before, is another one who does. She's a PHD, and definately has an above average intelligence. People's beliefs vary a lot on this, and that's what makes life great! I love my sister very much. We disagree on this subject. Hell, we disagree on almost everything!
My thoughts fall right in line with CBRiderNevada on this one, but I know many people who don't feel the same way. Nothing is going to change the way I feel about it, and nothing may change the way you feel.
It's just like religion, or politics, or abortion, or gay marriage, etc. etc. etc. Steve and Pete are right. No point in arguing about it.
I take no offense, and actually appreciate hearing other people's views on this subject (and all the other subjects posted above, for that matter). People just get too emotional and crazy when they feel threatened. Dam shame, really. I like to learn!

Please remember that this is not a political forum. And we solve no real worldwide issues other than maybe why a bike won't start. I would ask that you think of threads like different TV channels. Don't like the current show, change the channel. It would take 100% of my time if I decided to voice my opinion to the TV networks every time they air a show I disagree with ... so I change the channel and move on.
In the past we used to lock these types of pissing contests but it seems that only leads to a few dictating what everyone can discuss. Now we tend to give a friendly warning nudge and then edit out unnecessary posts and members.

On to guns. Lately, with the ammo shortges in this country, I've been shooting a lot more .22cal. I reload tons of .223, but even that has been getting expensive so I've switched to my .22LR selections. I like .22LR a lot. It's fun, and about as cheap as it gets. Also widely available, and the fiancee and the boy really get into it.
Here is a pic of a couple of my .22LR pistols. Up top is the classic Ruger MKII Target in stainless. Below is actually a Glock 21 (.45ACP) with a .22LR conversion kit by Advantage Arms. Neat little kit, really, and is an excellent trainer.

I just got this one a couple months ago. I had been looking for this one for quite a while. I specifically wanted the SS MKII Target with the bull barrel. I just didn't want to pay almost $600 for it from the local shop.
My buddy had the exact same one when we were younger, and I loved it. I gave him specific directions to call me if he ever wanted to part with it, but we lost touch for a bit, and he sold it to someone else!
Then, I saw this one, and the guy only wanted $300. I was first in line for it, and there were 5 or 6 others behind me...hoping I woldn't follow through. But I did. The guy was really nice. He's a police officer down in Virginia. He even drove it up here to me and delivered it!
It shoots great. I installed the geen dot scope and Wiegand rail. Just put the dot on the target.....and squeeze! Just a great gun. Worth the wait.

Dave, it is great fun! I like clays a lot, myself. I used to practice all summer when I was little. I had a hand thrower, and I would throw, grab the gun, and shoot. Believe me, you get better when you have to throw your own. With that method, it's real easy to just wait for them to crest. You really have all the time in the world if you can make a long shot. They hang out there in the distance, and it's an easy pic. Like shooting a stationary target.
If you want an even harder challenge, take the .410 for trap. That will humble most people. I had an NEF single shot, but I gave it to the boy for his 10th birthday last year. I got home from work and realized I didn't have a gift for him, so I pulled it out of the safe, wiped it down, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!:D

On a side note, I thought I'd share a little story about someone breaking into my house. This happened a couple months ago.
It's 3am, I'm sound asleep. My border collie comes in and wakes me up. He's whining and jumping around, and he keeps staring at the bedroom door. Then I hear a load "thud" outside.
I grab the glock from my nightstand, and open the bedroom door really slow. My dog takes off like a shot...barking the whole way. I slowly creep down the hall, checking every room. I look out into the dining room, and I see a shadow of a head go by the window. At this point, I'm like "WTF is going on?".
I look into the kitchen, and my dog is sitting in front of the sliding glass door, wagging his tail. I walk up behind him, look through the door, and see a police officer! I sat the gun down on the table, opened the door, and said "Can I help you, sir?"
He says, "Yeah, I think so....could you get your dam Jeep out of the middle of the road?"
So, I'm standing there in a snowstorm in my boxers and a t-shirt, look around the side of the house....and sure enough, my Jeep is in the middle of the road, blocking 2 snowplows and a line of traffic!!
Apparently, I forgot to set the parking brake, and even though it was in gear, it slowly rolled down the hill and stopped in the center of the road. :D:D
Talk about embarrased. Then, after I got my clothes on and was walking down to it (with everybody staring), I realized I had put my shirt on backwards!!

The hand thrower sounds challenging alright! We've thrown a few by hand for each other just for a laugh, but I'll stick to my spring loaded launcher. It only cost $100 AU and works great. We don't have a bunker so the person operating the trap has to be behind and far enough to one side so that the shooter doesn't cop a clay in the back of the head (I'm thinking up a whole new sport!). Our rules are that the shooter can't look where the clay is being loaded or see the elevation, so we mess with each others' heads with a few fake adjusting sound. Last time we shot, my son put one right at the end of the chute (half hanging out according to a visitor). I only saw it in the very corner of my eye and it never got higher than 1 metre. I got it just as it touched the top of the paddock grass! He was quite disappointed. We're going to our local club on Sunday for the monthly shoot and I'm looking forward to it almost as much as my next ride on the CBR...almost.

Nope, I would NEVER....EVER... take a shot at a shadow.
Unless it's an obvious break-in (who has a gun), nobody gets shot. :)
Truthfully, the lucky part is that I didn't get shot by the cop. We have some trigger happy clowns out here... He didn't even see me, he was actually busy dialing my house phone.
As far as the door knock, I think that's the original "thud" I heard. After that, he was too busy on the radio to dispatch.....getting my phone number. I thought the same thing at first...but i think he tried...just not enough.
Dave,
I actually just bought a "real" thrower a few weeks ago. It's sitting in my garage, and I haven't even tried it yet. I usually just use the club's trap stations. It's cheap and easy. It's like $3 per round. I've noticed that clays seem to be going up in price around here. Even the big box stores are charging like $10 per 100. I remember when it was like $4.50/100. I got lucky at the end of last season, though, and got about 12 cases for $1.99 each on clearance. They'll be gone by the end of this summer, though..
Trap shooting is definately fun. Like you said....it's almost as fun as riding the CBR....;):)

I pay around $25 for a box of 140 clays and a half case (250 shells) of 7 1/2 shot is about $85. I could get cheaper but I like to support my local shop.
Our club is around 45km from home so it's a bit far just for a quick practice shoot. Also I kind of like shooting at home with only us and the occasional visitor. We're highly competitive with each other and bag each other out without mercy! My young bloke beat me at a club shoot once and later, when we got home, he heard me taking a leak in my en-suite and called out from up the hallway "hey Dad, are you sure you can hit that?" Little smart ar2e!! I beat him next shoot but anything could happen on Sunday.
Legal shooting age here I think is 11 (he's 13) so obviously I didn't start him at 5 years old with the air rifle, .22 at around 8, and 12G at probably 10ish...obviously I didn't?? The little bugger's good too. It's well funny to see him out shooting adults with years of experience..some of them clearly aren't as amused as I am though.

Dave,
It's strange to me how close the price is between here and Aus. I always pay about $25 per 100rnds of bulk 12 or 20ga shells. The price actually went down last week to $20, but still, very close.
I like to support my local guy here, too. (Within reason)
I have a couple great local guys. One shop is like a second home to me...:)
I prefer shooting at home, but I don't have much room anymore. I used to shoot at my dad's a lot, too, but the neighbor has horses everywhere now. My club is only 3mins from my house, though, and is open dawn till dusk, so I can shoot whenever I want. There is usually nobody there, and the place is really nice. They have a lake and everything.
Sounds like your kid has the right idea.... :D:D
My kid isn't up to the challenge quite yet. I'm sure he'll get there in time, though. He's just getting used to it, and I'm definately no slouch. I've been shooting for as long as I can remember, and won't go down easy! :D
My right eye isn't as good as it used to be, but it hasn't seemed to hurt me too bad yet. Sometimes I feel it on the long shots with bigger rifles, though, especially with lower power scopes. Hasn't seemed to hurt my trap game yet though... (knock on wood)
