Alright, I've been trying to get my 97 600F3 started for the last month.

Did the following:
1. Changed plugs twice and getting spark
2. took apart and cleaned carbs
3. have direct fuel feed since pump went out
4. new battery

Observations:
1. Plugs are wet after cranking
2. Got her to turn on for a few seconds when I deprived the engine of air by putting a towel over the air intake funnels
3. Only turned on with fuel put directly into cylinders from top of carb
4. fuel level in hose doesn't seem to go down after bowls are filled even when bike starts up

My ideas of why it doesn't stay on:
1. not enough fuel getting to cylinders

Questions for you guys:
1. Why am I not getting enough fuel?
2. Or, why do I have improper fuel/air mix? (remember I cleaned carbs and made sure floats and jets were in good shape.)

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

 

clogged fuel filter?

Are you starting it with choke?

Did you sync the carbs when you put them back..

 

not to sound like an *** but ill point out the obvious just in case, is the battery good? Kill switch off?

just saying because i know i have done stupid stuff like forget the kill switch is on or not check if my battery has juice, then spend alllll day trying to figure out why it wasnt starting.

 

I bypassed the fuel filter and the Run switch is in the on position. I didn't take the carbs completely apart so didn't need to sync. All throttle valves open at the same time.

Yes battery is good I installed a new one and measured voltage across the top to be 13V.

 

Also, I am starting with the choke on

 

How does it go without the choke?, blocking the air with a towel is changing the air to fuel ratio, so I suspect you need to get your carb mixture at least done so it eliminates that as a culprit. Wet plugs can either mean that one or more cylinders are not firing, so coils? or to much fuel.

I love the Infernal Combustion Engine, but its usually something small & least obvious thing that does em in. Good luck.

So far, I pulled the carbs again and saw that the choke passage way was blocked so I cleared it out. My guess is thats why it was running lean even with the choke on...no flow with choke on.

My other question, I'm not getting fuel flow through the needle jet at all even though the passages are clear, any idea why there is no fuel (bowls all have fuel via gravity drain and bypassed fuel filter)? Or can someone explain how the fuel flow works when the bike is idling?

make sure fuel valve is in the down position

 

Are your jets all clean? The pilots have a fairly significant effect on low speed operation, and the bike wont run well if at all without them. how about your float height? are they set right?

 

I'm not hooked up to the tank directly as I have a big funnel hooked directly to the fuel inlet tube.

Jets are all clean. The only one I didn't clean was the pilot because I don't have the tool to get it off.

Anybody know how to take it off without the tool?
