View Full Version : Clear Alternative Integrated Tail Light

Has anyone swapped the tail light for the clear alternative integrated one? Freaking love it. $85 shipped on eBay, less than a week to receive and very easy to install. I tired taking pictures of the process, but my flash caused most of the pics to white out. Stupid me. I did get a good before and after shot. The light is actually brighter than stock and the fast flash doesn't bother me at all. It has resisters in the kit (really cheap heavy ones) but they don't slow it down much at all. I just left it as is and it's not really that fast. We'll have to see how it works after I put my flush mount LEDs on the front (using less voltage might cause them to flash faster). The install couldn't be easier... highly recommend it. The picture doesn't do it any justice...

I'm still using my hand made plate bracket... I don't know what I'm going to do when I install my RS5. I really want to take off everything so it's open... but I have to figure out how to make a different one. I have access to a sheet metal shop and could not live with myself if I paid $150 for a freaking bracket. Just seems really high to me for what it is. I mean it is just metal and not much of it... $50 would be high in my opinion.

I also took the red reflectors off the side… watch out, I’m becoming quite the rebel. I just thought about it… my state inspection runs out after I move to f*** em. I’ll update my gallery and post a thread with better pics once I have a few mods finished.

yeah i know what you mean don... the CW kit is pretty $$. i've been looking to get it for about 3 months now. i've looked at many other models... even thought about getting the CA integrated lights and buying a swing arm mount for the plate. but i recently got rid of one of my helmets and used that money towards the CW kit :) also, recently saw the CW installed on a 600rr in person and it looked GOOD. i'll be sure to post rear-end pics of my bike... before & after... stay tuned.

Hey don.....remember those little metal brackets that the rear reflectors mounted on? Well, put them back on backwards so that they angle underneath, then take a pair of vise grips and bend the bottoms of them 90 degrees so that they are perpendicular to the bike and parallel with each other...the holes will actually be close enough to mount your license plate on them.

Just a cheap way to use what you've got.

Nice.... this is the way I like to see the forum working. Great tips guys.

manningr2, I've already posted in your other thread praising your pictures/work of your bike and mods. Love it. I also asked a few questions so go answer them when you have time.

isolated1523, that sounds like a great idea. I will keep it in mind if I don't/can't use manningr2's method. I need to keep a license plate light and I'm not sure if I can make one work with his setup. Using the reflector brackets like you said, I can hide the wiring around it and keep it away from the exhaust.

cbr04, I thought about the swing arm mount, but again... license plate light kills it for me. I have to have one and I will not do anything that leaves wires exposed more than they have to be. I know the CW kit looks good and I hope I don't sound cheap... but come on... $150, $50 maybe, but hell no to $150. Look at what they have in the product.

I work around a machine shop and can pick up scrap metal (aluminum or stainless) and make it for next to nothing. All I'd have to buy is the hinge and roller they use to make it swing up. If someone has close up pictures of it that I can use as a template... I might be able to make a few of them.

not being cheap don... just being practical. i got it cuz it's something i wanted for a while... simple as that. when i get it i'll take close ups of it.. both on and off the bike. if you could make something similar for less $$... i'm sure a few guys on here would be interested :)

Hey Don.... I dropped you an email asking about your taillight you put in...... (no responce) SO I thought I would ask you on here...
Was it pretty much unplug and remove to plug and replace the tail light and blinkers.. Or did you have to splice it in?? I want one if its easy as un plug
to plug.....

Let me know...... THANKS!

WTF... sorry dude. Gotta love email. I replied back with a long ass email and ever sent you a picture showing you....

You can see the plug, it's about the same as the stock one. It's not perfect, but it does work. Then you have two yellow wires to connect to the blue (right signal) and orange (left signal) wires. Very simple to do.

Forgot to mention: The white resistors you see in the bag... junk. If you read the warning on them... they get as hot as the light bulb normally did and will melt plastic. I tested them and they did not slow down the flash much at all. All you need is the flasher relay out of a car. Go to any auto part store to buy one for about $15, or if that's too much for you... go shopping at a salvage yard and pull a few out from under the dash. I don't have anything on mine right now. The flash isn't that fast, but when I put my hotbodies LED flush mounts on the front... I'll bet it will be too fast. I'll probably go and pick up the signal flasher relay for a car and use it.

I've had a couple requests as to where I bought the tail light from. $84.95 with free shipping and it took less than a week. You know how eBay is and I do not know this seller, but I had luck with him.

Here's one of his auctions for the 600RR and 100RR, same light. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CBR1000RR-CBR600RR-CBR-600RR-1000RR-600-1000-Taillight_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35580QQitemZ4 604257444QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW)

And here is his store so when that link runs out. (http://stores.ebay.com/Extreme-Performance-Auctions)

Looks good Don! I got the same light on mine. And I don't think you're cheap for not wanting to spend $150 on a fender kit. The 600RR looks almost identical to the 1000RR which was easy to chop. I just ordered the LED tag bolts and tag bracket on e-bay. Costed like $30 to my door. You can't see it unless you put your head under the exhaust -- and when I'm hauling a$$ not too many peeps can do that. I even got creative and put some of that corrugated plastic wire cover thingy on it. Took a ziz wheel and cut the metal bracket and cut the ugly brown plastic thing (painted the ugly brown plastic thing black). http://www.chainstretcher.com/classic103_i00009c.jpg

I can't help it... I was trying to help others out by finding a better deal. Here are a couple pics of my process. I'm doing the prototype thing until I'm sure of what I'm going with. This doesn't look bad at all to me now. I used a 6" Stainless Steel hose clamp (Lowes $3.00) and modified the aluminum plate I already made. Also picked up a plate light from auto zone for about $5 and I also bought thermal sleeving by Mr. Gasket. Was on sale for 19.99, normally 29.99... and it claims to withstand 1200 F continuous and 2000 F peak. I used this on the wiring for the plate light and since I removed all of the heat shields... I used it on the wires for the rear break since the wires run really close to the exhaust.

Here's the pics of what I've done so far... I'll continue to post as I go. Sorry pics are dark... will do better on the next ones.

When's the new exhaust coming? It'll be sho-nuf fine when ya get it all together. Heck, it looks really good now. Just keep a keen eye on your plastic bits directly above the exhaust and make sure they don't get too hot with no shielding.

I don't have any shielding on my and its been OK for the past 1000 miles or so.....

I'm only doing trips to school and work... like 15 20 minutes tops right now. My new exhaust will be all carbon so I don't have to worry about the heat on the tail. I did how ever remove all of the heat shielding, all of it. I used the thermal sleeving on my wires for the plate light and my rear breaks. Here's a couple more pics in day light.

no1biscuit.. are you serious? I listed everything you need to do it, but the sheet metal is the only thing you'll have to do any work on. I will be making a new one for mine when I install the new exhaust just to clean it up. I can help you out with what ever you need. If you need me to, I'd piece together and ship what ever you need... just have to work out the funding details. It's all cheap. The sheet metal will be scrap from work.... thank you tax payers. You'd be amazed at how much metal is junked where I work at... But anyways... PM if you need anything.

Now.... for the pics in day light. The blue sleeving is rated at 1200 continuous and 2000 peak.

HUGE difference with the stock lights gone!!! Can't wait to see the new pipe and integrated lights up front.

Are you gonna get an OEM seat cowl, stay stock, or something else?

Oh yeah, and any luck figuring out a way to hook up farther underneath? My eliminator kit sits where yours does and I have hit my tire on it a couple of times with big holes and bumps on the street. Hoping to get way under like with Custom's. Just can't see where to bracket

01-16-2006, 09:35 PM
yea, the plate and light looks cool, I could do without the big blue wire showing on the one side.... I think thats why the pictues of others that I have seen with lights they put there's farther back so as to run the wire more under the seat....

P.S. looks like she/he needs a bath.... lol :D

doncollins
01-17-2006, 12:20 AM
Yes... it does need a bath. It's a bad time of the year to ride around here.

The blue wire doesn't look bad... it's the blue braded covering you see on car engines. I looked for black, but it only came in red, blue or chrome. So blue it is.

I will end up mounting this to the band that comes with the RS5. I'd love to get an OEM seat cowl... it's not worth $130 or $180 to me just yet. I'd have to find a one on sale for half price with a 50% off coupon to peak my interest.

I looked at manufacturing a kit like CW, but there really isn't that much room. With their design, I don't see how the plate would do anything but rub the hugger the entire time I'm on it.

But if anything... my stock exhaust looks much better now.... so if someone wanted to change the tail just for looks, this might be an option for them.

Don,

Take off those warning sticker on the left side of your swing arm. Oh yea also the one on the top front of your gas tank cover. Trust me you won't miss them.;)

doncollins
01-17-2006, 03:06 PM
The one on the tank is gone... my buddy removed it with chemicals when he did the blue outline. We/I meant to do the swing arm as well. But I always forget to when I have any goo remover handy... You know what... the hell with that. When I get home from work, I'll peel them off and worry about the adhesive later. That way I'll stop procrastinating and do it. Any other tips? I'm just about to the point I'd like to be with the looks. I have on order yellow reflective DUNLOP decals for the front fender. What do you guys think of that? I removed the cheap plastic reflectors so if I put the reflective yellow Dunlop up front, I'm back to code on that. I'm considering replacing the CBR 600RR with all red reflective to cover my rear. Any thoughts?

Anything would be better than the stock huffy reflector...

Hey on your integrated light is it a stock light that has been modified (taken apart and differen't lights added) or did they actually fabricate a new light?

Thanks
Thom

doncollins
01-18-2006, 01:31 AM
It looks like they had them made.... it's not hand modded if that's what you're asking. If you hold it up beside the stock light... the only difference was the extra yellow wires. That and it's a lot brighter. The stock has ten LEDs in it. The CA is filled with them. Best choice I ever made... I hare buying things like this on chance. They usually end up being cheaply made and not bright. This product is great....

I'm sure we can get a fender eliminator kit going.... I have the clamp and I'll be remaking mine in a couple of days. Are you going to stay stock on the exhaust? I will make two of the plates so I can send one your way. By the way, I can grab my plate and shake the bike with out it moving the bracket. It's solid.

So, you like the taillight? Nice. I do have one other question for you. Is it more visible during the daytime than stock? I've had 2 seperate people following me tell me my stock taillight is barely visible during the day with the sun out. That's the reason I orderd a new taillight. I've got one sitting in my closet right now, i just havn't had two seconds to go outside to install it. I've got the Clear Alternatives LED Integrated taillight for the CBR F2. I'll post the pics when i finally get around to installing it.

I guess if I were to read more I could have figured that out. Damn, I am not used to having a message board (forum) that actually has answers. Shame on me. Doncollins I have never seen a flasher relay. Does it have a coil and two triggers that take voltage to provide switching to the turn signals?

Thanks

The CA light is brighter than the stock one. I never had anyone tell me the stock was hard to see in day light, but you can test them side by side. When I started the install, I tore everything down and laid the new CA light on top of the stock one. Then I switched the wiring back and forth to see if it was bright enough to see. It was noticeable that the CA has more LEDs than the stock, thus being brighter.

Guess that answers the LED or regular bulb question. LEDs and a lot of them.

Installing the light is easy and fast... comes with everything you need. I didn't use the huge ceramic resistors in the kit because they will heat up just like a bulb. CA offers a electronic relay flasher as an upgrade. I looked at the relay and it's just a signal flasher, like the ones used in autos. So... I'll pick up two of those if my flash rate increases when I install the hotbodies LED front signals this week-end. I'm not saying it's a good idea... but since they cost about $18 each and you need two of them... me and a buddy might take a stroll through a local salvage yard. We have a "You Wrench It" only a few miles away. You pay $1 and walk around to see if you can find your own parts... A few thousand cars and all those free flasher relays waiting to be crushed. You do the math.

I haven't tested this yet, but my theory is if I use two of them running to the tail light, it'll put enough load back on the flash rate to slow it down. But if not... I'm sure more than two relays will find their way into my pocket as I walk around. I like the faster rate now. It's fast but I have completely off and all the way on. If it speeds up to the point they look like they stay on, I'll have to use the relays. The relays have three prongs... 1 in and 2 out (I think). Like I said, this is all still theory to me. I'll find out this week end and see what I have to do and post the results and yes... more large pics. I went back and made the pics on this thread smaller. It took a second or two to load for me and I have a fast connection. If someone was using dial up... I killed them.
