View Full Version : sometimes it starts sometimes it doesnt?
hedtrip 07-21-2008, 09:18 PM ok i have a 95 cbr600 that i got not to long ago.
somedays it will start & run just fine. & then the next day it wont start at all.
it first did it when i was going around the corner & it just stalled on me & wouldn't start back up, but it did later on. it seems to do it more when it is really hot.
& sometimes i have to hold the throttle all the way down for it to crank.
any idea's? im new to bikes.
thank you
rons93rr 07-21-2008, 09:30 PM could be a bad battery, i have a similar problem. when i would get ready to stop it would stall out on me(i ended up turning up the idle so it would not stall) but the same thing in the morning it would fire right up and when it got hot the battery did not have the juice to turn over the motor. so i swaped the battery from my other 900 and have not had a problem since, how ever the battery did the same thing w/the other bike.
hedtrip 07-21-2008, 09:42 PM even if i put it on my battery charger. let it charg & try to jump it off, it does the same thing.
rons93rr 07-21-2008, 10:06 PM it very well may be your alternator. if it was the battery it would push start and stay running due to the alternator, if it is still stalling out it's probly your alternator.
hedtrip 07-22-2008, 07:00 AM if it was the alt wouldn't it still start if i had the batt fully charged?
is the a way to test it?
hedtrip 07-24-2008, 04:00 PM any other ideas?
woo545 07-25-2008, 06:51 AM Is it cranking when you try to start it?
Do you have a spark in all 4 Cylinders?
Have you checked the resistances of the wires and the coils?
Is the petcock open?
Have you cleaned the carbs?
Have you synced the carbs and adjusted the pilots?
hedtrip 07-30-2008, 02:59 PM i am getting spark to all 4 plugs.
& i have cleaned the carbs.
whats the petcock?
Xuracing 07-31-2008, 02:04 AM Sorry for the thread hijack. How fast do you have to be to push start? I did it today with my bike at 12mph because it died. When i let the clutch out the rear just locked up
DukeCBR 08-01-2008, 08:47 AM The petcock is another name for your fuel switch. Yes, if you battery is fully charged and your alternator is disconnected it should still start, but soon your battery will die because its not being charged.
It sounds to me like faulty electronics, have you tried disconnecting your kickstand switch? Check for any loose connections around your fuse box area. Check if any of the connections are burned, that will indicate a loose one, including your fuses.
That happened to me as well when I was using the wrong fuel for my bike. Older bikes run better on lower octane fuel, higher octane fuel isnt more powerful, its more suited for engines with higher compression ratios.
justasquid 08-01-2008, 09:10 AM Thread highjacker.... you need to be in second gear to bump start your bike..
I would also check your killswitch. if its malfuctioning, it will still allow the engine to turn over, just not fire.
Also, next time it happens, remove the screw from the bottom of your carbs to see if there is fuel in the carbs.
also, remove the line from your tank to see if there is a good flow of fuel from the tank.
hedtrip 08-02-2008, 10:06 AM i,ve checked all my wires & connectors that i can see. kick stand & fuel cut off seem to be working fine.it's getting gas. today i let it run for mybe 30 min's & started it a few more times after that. but it takes a min for it to start, i have to hold the throtle all the way down for it to start.
DukeCBR 08-02-2008, 01:52 PM Hmmmm, did you check your plugs? If your bike starts crappy but runs cool, it sounds like its running lean. As you say all of your electronics are cool then there is only one explanation, your carbs are running too lean. When starting rather not use the throttle but use your choke. When you cleaned your carbs, did you take a thin wire and put it through your pilot jets as spraying only will not clean it properly. Have you set your Pilot Screws properly to the correct fuel mixture?
willduce 08-02-2008, 04:40 PM if you have to hold it wide open when cranking it is running too rich not toolean.
tds94probe 08-03-2008, 05:00 PM sounds to me like its flooding itself on a few cylinders. Check all your plugs after it stalls on you and see which ones are soaked. You most likely have dirt blocking one of your needles off the float, allowing too much gas into the bowl. Just fixed this same problem on my girlfriends bike. Took the needles out of the seats and blew compressed air up through the seat and out the fuel line. Runs better than before now. I would say pull your bowls apart and take the floats out, make sure they dont have gas inside the float, then check your needles and seats for wear. If they all look ok, try the compressed air to get any dirt out of the innards.
