View Full Version : Idle adjustment
reddoggredd 11-17-2007, 03:19 PM I just bought my first bike and it is a 95 cbr F3 only runs with the choke on I need to turn the idle up but cant find the idle adjustment screw can someone tell me where it is located and what is next to your help would be greatly appreciated.
knightslugger 11-17-2007, 03:27 PM it's got to be close to the throttle on the carbs.
marc0011 11-17-2007, 04:47 PM You should have a little knob located on the left side of the bike behind and just below the fuel valve. You'll see it in the opening of the side fairing. If it isn't in the hanger, it might be dangling around somewhere near the fuel pump. If you still can't find it, it just might not be there. Like Knight was saying, it's located just under where the cables attach to the carbs which is between carb 2 and 3. The idle adustment actually attaches to carb 3. You'll have to remove the entire air box (even the part attached to the carbs)to remotely catch a glimpse of it.
reddoggredd 11-18-2007, 08:41 AM Thanks for your help, I see the hanger where it is suppose to be but its not their . What do I do now, do I have to remove the air box to get to the middle of the 2nd and 3rd carb. so I can adjust the idle?
woo545 11-18-2007, 11:10 AM Well, if you don't see the knob, then there is a good chance there won't be anything to adjust. You may have to buy a new(used) one. But it will be easier to determine if it is missing by removing the airbox.
uglyangelracing 11-18-2007, 06:28 PM Check to see if its there hanging on top of the tranny if not I have a spare one I think. I will check this weekend
marc0011 11-18-2007, 09:29 PM It sounds like it's not there. Take up on uglyangelracing's advice before tearing into it. If it's not there, than you're going to have to buy one like woo545 said. Then comes the fun part... installing it. Like I said before, you'll have to remove all of the air box. You'll most likely have to pull the carbs off to get the pig tail screwed in. Theseat for the idle adjustment sits on carb 3 just off a screw that secures the float bowl.
woo545 11-19-2007, 06:24 AM You don't have to remove the airbox to install the screw, but the left fairings definitely would need to come off if you don't. Even then it's difficult to the right angle since you can't see what you are doing.
demonchild 11-19-2007, 11:58 AM good luck installing it. my friend was messing with that knob once (not sure how he found it) and wondering what it does. he uninstalled it (the easy part). by the time i reinstalled it i wanted to kick his ass.
fastrr 11-19-2007, 01:32 PM My 95 900RR has the same carb idle adjuster set up as your F3. Make sure you install the spring onto the end of the adjuster that screws into the carburetor. The spring simply applies pressure so the idle adjuster won't vibrate loose, thereby changing your idle. The microfiche drawing in the link here shows on Carb #3 the hose and threaded end that screws into the carb to adjust the idle.. gives you an idea of what exactly your missing on your bike.

MikeInCtown 11-19-2007, 02:18 PM The adjuster that is being mentioned will adjust idle speed as it relates to carb opening, not fuel. I found that when I adjusted mine upward, the bike would take quite a while to rev down to idle speed once I stopped. (if it went down at all some times) This caused harsh shifting in my case. I also found that there are idle adjustment screws on each carb IIRC that deal with setting the fuel each carb gets. These ports are what the mechanics should be using to adjust idle when you take the bike in for carb work.
Seems to me that if the bike only runs with choke on that it's a fuel issue that needs to be taken care of. The speed adjustment may keep the bike running, but if it's running too lean, you need to get that taken care of.
Will the bike run when you are giving it throttle, but have the choke off? ie, when going down the street, can you take the choke off and the bike will continue to run?
reddoggredd 11-19-2007, 03:00 PM Yes the bike will run fine while riding down the road under throttle, its when I come to a stop when the bike cuts off. But it will fire back up with the choke off if u keep the rpm's up.
MikeInCtown 11-19-2007, 03:05 PM Since idle is normally only about 1,300 RPMs, I assume that "keeping the idle up" only amounts to 1,500 or so?
reddoggredd 11-19-2007, 05:07 PM yes anywhere from 1100 to 1600 rpms
