Well I figured I would start this thread up for anyone dumb enough to undertake something like this (not really dumb, but it is for those of us who like to "visually mod" as well as "performance mod")...
I have an '01 Red/black F4i....I am going to be doing a lot of cosmetic work on the bike as well as performance mods...but I know since i have gotten into working on my bike, i am searching all over for different things to do, different ways to do it....wondering the in between steps, etc....so i figured i would make this a pseudo diary of what i have done, am doing, and will do...
i currently don't have my camera pictures with me as i post this, but i will post pictures of the bike before so everyone can have a reference for how i got it.....and post pictures as i go along for everything i do to it...
i will try and keep this main post as an index for all the things i have done so you can jump to things from here...
if you think this is a dumb idea, let me know, i won't bother doing it seeing as it will be some work to keep it updated and whatnot...but i know i have looked at the ROTM bikes and wondered how they started, or how much it took to get them to where they are...yeah you hear the "i did x,y, and z" but how....what order, how long it take, etc....and how many cheap mods did a lot, whereas how many expensive mods (i.e. full systems, PCIII tuned, etc.) were done.....i just thought it would be cool for one, to give ideas to those out there, and two to encourage people to mess with their bikes and make them their own....i think it will help out the newbs out there trying to figure out what's out there while at the same time being interesting for the experience guys who have done this....
so i guess without further ado....
here she is when i got her....(i'll work on a bigger pic)

Stealth Garage Door Opener
Ranking of project 1-10 (10 being worst):
Cost: 2 - very cheap
Difficulty: 4 - not very hard, should know SOME wiring, requires removing upper vent (easy)
Functionality: 1 - easily the best bang for the buck mod i have done yet
Visuals: 4 - sort of cool that it can't be seen...overall, not really a visual element at all
Time: 5 - if you know wiring, quick, if not longer...about 45 min.
Overall: 4 - ...REALLY cheap mod...and is extremely functional....
the first mod i did was integrate my garage door opener into the upper vent cover....i hated carrying around my opener and i had lost one already while riding (yeah i know, i'm stupid)....so i spent about $10 in parts and put this on my bike...it's stealthy so most people don't even notice it and it works like a charm...not a single issue since i put it in....i also didn't wire it to the battery so when i remove the upper vent cover, the whole thing comes off, making it easy to work on if i need to and without the extra hassle of running a ton of wires....
here are some pics.....sorry for the crappy pics there were on my cell at the time, i will work on putting up nicer ones
Keep it up! This could be handy for someone in the future. Bike looks damn nice man!

oh thanks....yeah i am gonna keep adding more tonight hopefully....
seriously...it doesn't look like that anymore though...with the stickers off, the blacked out windshield and the undertail...she has a slightly different look...now she is torn apart in my garage sitting with no fairings, no rearsets, no pegs, no enginge covers, and no exhaust...i have pics...i will post them tonight...

Hotbodies Flushmounts (front)
Ranking of project 1-10 (10 being worst):
Cost: 4 - about $50 (with wiring elements)
Difficulty: 6 - only because i did the running light mod
Functionality: 6 - unfortunately, they are not as visible, but are brighter
Visuals: 3 - look WAY better than the stalks IMO
Time: 6 - if you know wiring, quicker, if not longer...about 1.5 hrs
Overall: 4 - ...moderately priced, MUCH better look over stock....
I bought my flushmounts on ebay for about $40 i think....the only problem with most aftermarket LED flushmounts is that they will have only two wires running from them, a positive and ground....this is where most people get confused....
1) take off the front fairing...really, it's not that hard just a few screws and unclip the master harness and it pops right off....i took mine off, and took it inside to work on
2) the bitch part was trying to get the damn stalks off....the bolt is on the inside of the fairing and for some reason BOTH of mine were like they were seized and wouldn't turn...it took me 45 minutes to get those SOBs off...i ended up trashing both as i ripped the plastic coating around them, arghhh...i hated those things...
3) i clipped the wires close to the end of the stalk so as to retain the plug that goes from the stock signals to the wiring harness...i did this just for ease...and much easier to deal with
4) here is where it gets interesting, i am not going to go into the details as you can find it in the "How-to" sections....using two transistors per side (the extra 'wiring cost')....the two running and blinking wires from the bike go to the ONE positive lead of the LEDs and the grounds are hooked together....
5) do this to both sides, bring down your fairing...HOOK UP THE PLUGS...DO NOT INSTALL THE FAIRING.....and turn on your bike and make sure everything works....blinkers and running lights....good chance a lead may come loose so check before you take the time to reinstall the front fairing...
Note: i didn't install a resistor because i like the increased blink rate, but that's just me (if you have no idea what i am talking about and need explanation, just ask)
without further ado...some pics (once again...sorry about the crappy cel pics, i will update these)
Ranking of project 1-10 (10 being worst):
Cost: 7 - about $190
Difficulty: 6 - have to take off rear fairing (sort of sucks)
Functionality: 7 - doesn't really do anything functionally
Visuals: 2 - looks WAY better than the fender, starts to look 'faster'
Time: 7 - not very hard, but time consuming...about 2 hrs
Overall: 5 - ...you can do it cheaper but an fender elminator or undertail generally is the best way to go....
sooo...undertails....you can read a TON about undertails here and everywhere else...there are fender eliminators, undertails (hotbodies, euro, pimpbikes, etc.)....really just search around and find something you like...they most all entail the same things although an FE might work slightly differently (no cutting i believe in most cases)....you can read about how to install them, but generally, it's pretty easy although time consuming...
1) take off your rear cowl....SUCKS....you might feel like you are going to break it removing it, but just be careful and you'll be fine...
2) cut down the bottom of the stock rear compartment (it is replaced by the undertail)...do it nice, but doesn't have to be "that" nice because the undertail will cover it up
3) relocate the lock (this sucks, just follow the instructions the best you can)...you will understand when you actually do it....
4) install the rear cowl again, install the undertail...
5) following the wiring instructions if your tail came with integrated lights...once again, if you want to keep your stock flash rate, you will need to install resistors or a new relay....i didn't bother, i like the increased rate and i have LED fronts and backs....
that's basically it...i mean really basic overview...it is obviously much more involved, but it isn't complicated
it adds a great look to the bike in my opinion getting rid of the ugly fender....now a fender eliminator does the same but doesn't actually give you a full undertail but it is a lot cheaper....(to tell you the truth, some FE are AWESOME looking, check the board)
here is how mine turned out....(crappy pics, i know, cel, will fix... :)) NOTE: UPDATED PICS NOW...still crappy, but better
alright so it seems i have some positive response so i will keep going with it....up next...blacked out windshield and stickers

Blacked out OEM Windshield AND Sticker RemovalAND Carbon Fiber Bar Ends
Ranking of project 1-10 (10 being worst):
Cost:1 -free to remove stickers, and $5 for paint
Difficulty:1 -c'mon
Functionality:-10 -does nothing, windshield may worsenfunctionality
Visuals:1 -this is just my opinion though
Time:5 -believe it or not, this takes time
Overall:1 - ...so easy, and makes such a huge difference IMO....
I am not going to do a project ranking for the bar ends, simply buy them ($15-50), unscrew the old ones, put the new ones in...some are better for vibration some are not, just test em out and go with it....(you can notice them in some of the pics)
so i am doing these together because it isn't really a writeup so much as an idea for people....first the stickers...
i personally think honda put WAY too many stickers on the f4i....it's amazing, if you stand back and just look at the paint job, it's pretty powerful on it's own...(granted i am repainting soon, but it will be a spin off of the stock scheme)....
the only real thing to know about doing this are a few simple suggestions
1) use a blow dryer to heat up the stickers....they are sort of vinylish so they will stretch as you peel them off, but they will come off A LOT easier....don't even think about reusing them....not unless you have the patience of a saint to not pull hard (not me)....
2) after removing them, the "backing" willl still be on the bike...it will be the black tacky stuff from the sticker....remember this....GOO-GONE IS YOUR FRIEND...buy a big bottle, i found it in a spray bottle like windex, almost 1/4 of the way through it now...(great for grease and other things too)....spray it on the goo spots from the stickers and let is sit for a bit....then start rubbing with something non-abrasive...a shammy or auto rag....just repeat until its all gone...just don't let it dry, and after you do it, clean up the area with a cleaner and polish so the goo-gone doesn't sit (i think eventually it will damage but it will take awhile)
that's it....results...very different...compare these pics with my bike before picture...notice the rear cbr and honda sticker is gone as is the front cbr sticker on the front fairing...looks a lot cleaner IMO
other side, i also took off the stickers on the chainguard and the frame...cleans it up i think too....(sorry for the dirty pics, i was riding in the rain then working on the bike, felt no need to shine her up yet)
-----------------------------------------
The blacked out windshield....
i was too cheap to buy a smoked windshield (for now)...and i wanted to spend that $70 on something else more important, so my buddy turned me on to this idea...essentially just get some black plastic bonding paint....spary the inside of the windshield and VIOLA....blacked out windshield...
1) take off the windshield, be careful to not lose the washers for the screws...you'll see what i am talking about...just don't rush...
2) clean up the windshield good....grab your Goo-gone....then windex it.....maker sure there is nothing on the inside...make sure

Painted Upper Vent Covers
Ranking of project 1-10 (10 being worst):
Cost:2 -can of black paint
Difficulty:2 -have to remove the vent covers
Functionality:10 -does nothing
Visuals:3 -think it makes a big difference
Time:3 -time to let the paint dry
Overall:3 - ...simple visual mod, once again, sort of just 'pops'....
i should have included this is the last pseudo mod post...but ehhh....that post was getting long....
basically, i was thinking about doing this mod, but was on the fence...it just so happened that while i was thinking about it, someone posted about how they wanted to try it and got a lot of good responses...so i thought 'what the hell'....the only problem with this is once you do it, you can't really 'go back' because to remove the paint would damage the plastic covers...so if you are going to do it, you are going to live with it...be forewarned.....that said....i love this mod....it's so stupid, but it is a great little trick to make your bike pop...
i used black although any color is fine....matte or gloss, or whatever will work....it's nice because it covers that faded look the plastic gets after getting old...before you start telling me that they have the black restore stuff...i know...but that is once again temporary...plus with paint, you can change colors, finishes, etc...if you just want to get the black back, then get the black renew stuff, if you want to do a custom job...read on....
it's real easy....just take off the upper vent covers...for those who don't know what those are...they are the black pieces of plastic to the left and right of the tank between the tank and the windshield....look and you'll know what i am talking about...essentially, they cover the intake ducts from the front of the bike to the airbox.....
once they are off, paint, let dry, reinstall....hard...i know ;)
my only suggestions....prime it....because that area is a 'high traffic' area in that you will be touching it a lot or rubbing on it, it will flake...so prime it with a good plastic primer and then paint...i didn't do that...i already flaked in an area...it's barely noticeable but i notice it...when i get the bike repainted, i am just going to have them paint them and clear them so i don't really care at this point...
it's nice, if you use gloss, it's easier to keep clean than the texturized surface originally there....and like i said, it just makes the bike pop a bit....
hear you can see each vent cover and the way it shines....it looks nice don't ya think...for a cheap mod...it stands out nicely...
i'll get another farther shot during theday sometime and post it....

Alright so my next few posts are going to be a part of ONE project...sort of....let me sort of outline it here first...
I got my new Bootleg exhaust, but I am going for a black all over bike and will be attempting to paint or powder or coat anything that is metal colored or not black or red....that being said, i wanted my exhaust midpipe to be black as well as the can (got CF)...i found a place to ceramic coat GLOSS black (i know, cool)....so in doing that....i figure, hell, i have to take off the side fairings to do that, might as well just send in other things to be powdered in one shipment...
me and my bright ideas...so i decided to have my rear pegs, rearsets, rear brake line retaining hooks, stator/clutch cover, new heel guards and new chainguard all done at the same time.....soooooo....yeah....think about what that entails....it's a lot more than you think....
so the next few posts, which i will not start tonight (too late) will detail a little of what it takes to take all that off and some things i noticed....and answer some questions and reservations I had before undertaking all this...specifically, i will talk about...
- putting on a slipon exhaust (crazy easy)
- removing the rear pegs (EASY) - diassembling (daunting, but VERY EASY)
- removing the rearsets (EASY) - disassembling (has some tricks)
- chainguard, heel guards, etc....(too easy, brief run over at best)
- stator and clutch cover (oyyyy......daunting...sort of...then when done...seems easy)
- finally, reassembly, and pictures of the final product...
soooooo, stay tuned...pics to comeand a write up on each thing talked about above...
btw....here was a before pic before i tore her up....

so hear are some after pics from disassembly to send things out for coating and whatnot...
as you can see, no pass. pegs, no rearsets, no muffler....and of course no clutch case cover....(and the wonderful oil bin...lol)

Passenger Pegs
Alright, i am not going to give a project rating on this stuff well, because i did the whole thing at once and it's a lot to take off....but none of it was hard...pretty much just unscrew things...so rather, i am going to talk about the pass. pegs here and the rearsets in another post....essentially...those things are sort of neat to look at up close so i took some pics...sooo...here we go...
first taking them off is easy...just unscrew the muffler from the right side, and unscrew both from the subframe...SUPER easy....but when you send things out to powder...you either have to disassemble them yourselves or pay the coaters...to have the coaters disassemble my rearsets and pegs, they would have charged $70 to take them apart and $70 to put back...a $140 TOO DO THAT??? yeah...but you have to think it's time they don't want to spend...
so i thought, crap...this is going to be a pain...turned out it wasn't, but you have to remember how things go and being that i would be taking them apart then waiting a week....i don't trust my memory...haha...so i took pictures....here's the pass. peg...
as you can see (hopefully)...the "hinge" is hitch pin (i think that's what they're called)...you just pull out the retaining "wire" (it's just a soft piece of bendable metal) and the pin slips right out...
now you can see a plate on the right side...that is nestled between the peg and the holder....i didn't take a clos eup of it...but essentially it has two recesses in it....and a little guide area....looking at the peg...you can see the ball that is used to lock into those recesses...the ball is sitting on top of another hole....in there is a spring so that the ball can compress into the hole....so the way the pegs work is when you move them...the ball is pushed into the hole on the peg....rides along the ridge on the plate until it gets to the other recess in the plate where it springs up a little bit (the click you hear) and it's locked in place....
so to send out for coating...take the plate, the ball, and the spring...put them in a baggie (as i did with everything and marked so i knew which goes with what)....and clean up the pieces....
and just a special note....on the right side peg...that black "washer" as it looks from the outside actually runs THROUGH the peg holder...so it takes a little bit to fold up the lip on one side and push it through to get it out...also...remember the way the washers are (if you're anal like i am)....
I have a hotbodies undertail but unfortunately, I don't have the instructions. I'm wary of doing any permanent cutting w/o any guides.
Can you post pics of what you had cut...even better, can you scan the instructions?

yeah the exact instructions they give you, are the ones you can download from the site...although i found them to be marginally helpful....(very helpful for wiring though....)
if you do a search (i will try to get it later)...someone documented how they did it...it wasn't great, but it helped...
EDIT: here is the site http://gallery.devnulled.com/v/autos/2002F4i/F4i-undertail/
it will at least give you an IDEA of where to cut
briefly, you pretty much cut the plastic glove box along the bottom of the subframe so if you were looking at it...NOTHING would be below the subframe bar line....then you cut the glove box at the end near the tail up to where there is an actual box.....can't explain it really...looking down on it....it will look like a box....then further towards the tail...just some more plastic...pretty much cut to keep the box....i'll see if i can find the pics online...

Rearsets Removal
Alright here's another update....yeah....
as i said before in the last post, taking off the pass. pegs was pretty easy...the rearsets are sort of that simple, but there are a few more things to remember and keep straight, especially since one side is your brake, the other the shifter...
so basically, there are two bolts (i think from memory) that hold the shifter side on....then of course there is the shifter rod that connects to the gear shift pedal link....
this is how i did it
- unscrew the rearset from the bike, and spin the rearset off the shift rod...
the interesting thing that you may not know or cared to look at is that black "boot" on your shifter rearset...that essentially covers a ball joint that allows the shiftroad to move freely rather than a hinge....the kicker about this though is that you can't disassemble that ball linkage...i looked at it and it seamed shut...so what i did was remove the black boot and shipped it that way...i figure if the coater says something, i will ask how the hell he removed it...here is a pic of the joint...
as you can see, there is no spring on the shifter side (i am pretty sure, i will double check tonight and post if it does) primarily because the gear shift assembly provides the push back on the shift lever....(if that makes any sense, if you take it apart you will understand what i mean)...in contrast to the brake side, which has two springs, one for the tailight switch and one for the brake....
onto the brake side....like i said, it has two springs on it so the most important thing is to remember where the damn springs go...i didn't take a picture of the light spring because it's obvious where it goes but i did take a pic of the big spring because there are a few possible places if you forget (this way i wouldn't forget)....when removing the brake side, the rear master cylinder is also bolted to the rearset so be aware...mine is left hanging (if you look closely at my tear down pics, you can see)....but long as you remember the spring locations, the brake side is essentially the same as the shifter side...here's a pic with the spring...
you can see the hole on the right, that is where the brake light spring attaches to (i am pretty sure, once again will confirm when i get home..99% though ;))
so those are the nuiances of each side...jointly....you have to take them apart....
first remove the foot rests....this is simple and is held together just like passenger pegs except that instead of having a ball and spring to lock them in place, you have a spring so that they stay down, but can flex upwards...the rubber that is attached to them is held on by a screw undenearth the peg, unscrew and the rubber comes off....here is a look at the footrest
on the left you can see the washer, hitch pin and retaining wire used to hold it on the rearset (it's the same for both sides)....just remember how the spring goes...(thus the picture) (remember, i am forgetful)...
finally, you need to take off the clutch and brake lever...they are essentially held on the exact same way...they have a washer and...now here's the kicker...retaining clips...yeah...i didn't have retaining clip pliers so i had to go out and buy some...(i got internal/external so i wouldn't need another pair in the future, but it is an inter

i think everything cost me all of $10 max and that was with buying new shrink tubing and more wire....just make sure you get a "momentary" switch, not a toggle.....the LED i have on there is there only for when i need to check battery strength, as one person pointed out, the viewing angle is very limited...i just put it there becuase i didn't tie the opener to the bike battery, so i needed to be able to somehow check if the batteries were still good without taking it apart....but yeah, it's worked like a charm...

will all be coming in....i am going to start assembly on this on saturday....my buddy is bringing his NICE camera to take pics of things so i will go into a little more detail in the reassembly of everything....
i am not going to take pics of the reassembly of the individual pieces...e.g. the rearsets and pegs...IF you want these pictures, speak now....for as tomorrow night, i will be assembling them in order to be put back on the bike....
FURTHER...IF you want to see anything in particular detail....e.g. putting on the stator/clutch cover, installing the pegs, installing the rearsets, installing the exhaust....LET ME KNOW BEFORE SATURDAY 9/22/07 as after that it will be too late....
FINALLY, this is also a note that I will be putting on my LED body lighting this weekend....i am going to try and do a detailed write-up on it....because i know a lot of people wonder....once again...IF you want to know anything specific as I do it....let me know....
alright....get ready....big changes a comin....(i can't wait, i haven't ridden in like 3 weeks!!!)

the garage door opener thing is very cool man. pretty ingenuitive. I've got a suggestion you should do and then document so it will be easier for me to do on my f4i hehe [8D]. order a dual filament HID light kit with ballasts and bulbs in 6000k-8000k on ebay and then put it on your bike so that low and high beams are functional under each lens. i saw a kit for a car with the bulb and ballasts go for about $100. i noticed you said you're a computer guy that likes radioshack and i personally suck with wiring things.
ffingers
09-21-2007, 09:10 AM
Ace....i thought about doing something like that and actually looked into....what i found is that the dual filaments don't work with the existing wiring...i suppose i could figure out a way to make it work, but that would be A LOT of wiring...
additionally, i have read about some HIDs being too hot for the casing and melting it....i am pretty sure dual filaments were the culprit, i don't necessarily know how HIDs function, so i am not sure why....the other problem with that i heard is that both bulbs are the same in the f4i....the only thing that makes the high beam high is the way the reflector casing is made, IF that is the case, no matter what bulb you put in the casing, it will seem high, even if you have a dual filament for high beams....
i don't know though...when i get everything done i am working on, i will look into....right now my office has been destroyed with parts, fairings, etc. lying around and my wife is not to happy about...lol...so i have to clean everything up before i tackle a new project...but i will research and see what i find...

Overall: 4 - ...REALLY cheap mod...and is extremely functional....
the first mod i did was integrate my garage door opener into the upper vent cover....i hated carrying around my opener and i had lost one already while riding (yeah i know, i'm stupid)....so i spent about $10 in parts and put this on my bike...it's stealthy so most people don't even notice it and it works like a charm...not a single issue since i put it in....i also didn't wire it to the battery so when i remove the upper vent cover, the whole thing comes off, making it easy to work on if i need to and without the extra hassle of running a ton of wires....
here are some pics.....sorry for the crappy pics there were on my cell at the time, i will work on putting up nicer ones
sweet now all i have to do is find you in Chicago and i get a free bike ! lol im jk :)

ffingers.. i saw a thread somewhere about a kid who put R6 projectors in his f4i. i checked it out and it looked pretty sweet. i think those are HID lights actually. at least one side is anyways. couldn't be too hard to convert the high beam over. i'm pretty interested in this mod so i'll see what i can find too.

hey ffingers, im interested to see how you got your engine covers done. did you manage to get just the outside powdercoated, or are the entire things covered? im just wondering if it will affect the gasket or the oil or anything....
ffingers
09-26-2007, 09:36 AM
alright...my buddy still has the pictures but i got everything put on. i will get pictures posted as soon as i can. everything turned out awesome....i mean it looks so different, but you can't quite put your finger on what it is.
now just a note to everyone who powdercoats....have you ever watched something like american chopper?? where they bitch about the chroming or powder...yeah....now i know why....because a lot of the pieces have very small tolerances, it was a BITCH to put some things back together, specifically the rearsets and their associated levers....it took a lot of sanding and some wd-40 to get things to work, but it eventually worked out. the covers went on without a hitch and everything was great. i found a NICE how-to another 600rr.net that i will post a link to just because i didn't take the time to document it, but it's exactly what needs to be done.
finally, the bootleg pipe...IN...CRED.....IBLE!!! first, wait til you see the black pipe...it looks sick, second, it sounds even better than it looks....
i also started my bodylighting install, but because i got sick, didn't get that far....but that will be coming soon....
i also have an APE cct to install and might be getting my frame sliders shortly so stay tuned.

alright i feel horrible it has taken this long but my buddy has ALL the pics from the install....but here is one from his camera phone at least showing the exhaust....he is uploading the rest of the pics tonight so i will post them in a few days....so basically in this pic you can see the black engine cover, the black rearsets, and black pegs, with the bootleg exhaust and the black midpipe...like i said..sorry it's a crappy pic, but at least you can get an idea...
i did also start the LED install....i will have more on that later...and i just got my frame sliders in and will be tackling that project in the coming weeks as well...

Ace, not really...i live in a condo and we have an underground heated garage....i used to have a house with a 2-car attached garage...man do i miss it now....luckily....the parking spaces are REALLY wide and there are large cement support beams between every few spaces so i can pull my bike in between the two columns being virtually protected....the neighboring spot is pretty cool and has never complained about me having things apart...i just try and not let things pile up by their spot....that being said, i don't like leaving it on a stand down there...no problems yet, but i live in a college area in downtown chicago and the last thing i want is some drunk ass college kid wandering into our garage and messin with it on the stand....so i try not to leave it up for too long....

Alright so i feel like an a$$ for not updating this thread for so long, but things have been REALLY busy the last couple of months or so...so here's a basic update on how things are going along and I will continue with my writeups accordingly....also sorry about the lack of pics, my camera went missing for awhile so i couldn't take any pics....plus the lighting in my garage blows so it's hard to get decent pics, but i will do what i can...
I put on all the stuff I had powdercoated...pretty much went off without a hitch other than a lot of sanding where powder built up and made fitment an issue, but it was easily resolved with some elbow grease....
the bike looked sick IMO after putting everything on and sounded even better...i will write up my impressions of the Bootleg pipe in another post with more pics of it on the bike...i will also take some closeups of the powdercoated stuff on the bike to see how it blends...it's amazing how nice things look....
i also bought a set of ProGrip grips for the bike, i wanted something that had a hint of red in them as well as something a little softer than the OEM grips....they went on super easy...way easier than i thought and is a pretty cool mod to do for comfort and appearance and is easy on the wallet.....
I also bought a set of Spiegler SS brake lines in, you guessed it, red and black coating and banjos....put those on and that was not necessarily hard as it was slightly confusing....more to be detailed in the walkthrough.....
since i had my brake lines off, i sent my calipers out to be powdercoated honda red and gloss black...they came back looking awesome and really add a little punch to the wheels....there is nothing much to say about this as i pretty much just took them off and shipped them out, but i will talk a little about the calipers for those a little more ambitious...i was initially then got lazy...;)
finally, while doing the brake system....i have everything black on the right side of the bike...EXCEPT the damn rear master cylinder...so considering i had everything else off, i bought a spare for $25....and painted it by hand with exterior black gloss enamel and shot it with some clear....came out AWESOME....i also wanted to see if i could tint the reservoir...yeah that didn't work out great, so rather i just painted it and left a viewing window...i will talk about that too....that little mod did wonders for the look of the bike....pics will explain it better....
i still haven't finished the LED install only because i can't do it in my garage....it's always lit...so i have to go to my buddy's garage and unfortunately he's not very reliable....so the times when i could, he couldn't....and when he could, the bike was torn down on stands for other reasons....so some work has been done including mounting the remote controller in the bike and prepping all the wiring....all that is left is the actual light placement....i might write about the prep if i get a chance....
i broke down and bought some sliders....with all the coating and work i had done...it would be poetic if i dropped it...so i got those...they are ready to go on, but i wanted to do the laser method and didn't have a pointer...i finally found one for $3 and am ready to do it...will let you know how that turns out...(i am scared to death to cut my fairings though...[:o])
i also hopped on the special for the 520 chain and sprocket setup...except i went custom and got a black rear Cat5 Vortex sprocket and dropped a tooth (-1) in the front for a little more pickup...(i don't need a ton since i do a lot of stop and go in the city)....i also wanted a red chain so i ended up getting the a red EK MVXz chain....i also got the speedohealer that needs to be put on...the speedohealer will get put on soon and i will write that up...but the chain and sprocket will be later because i am going to have the rims powdered gloss black to match the rest of the bike and there is no sense in

lol...that's not a bad idea....
as for the bike, i appreciate it...it's got a lot to go though...and the pictures up here right now don't do it justice because i don't have a good pic with all the painted and powdercoated stuff on it...plus with the red brake lines...it looks awesome to have a completely black back half with just a single red brake line going to black and red calipers....
i can't wait to get the wheels glossed up...the sort of matte stock finish is really annoying....and just doesn't work well...once i get the wheels glossed black, i will put on the red rim stripes to pull it all together....
just a little teaser as to stuff to come....
HIDs...mesh in the fairing openings in black...rim stripes...vinyl tape to make the headlights looked blacked out...same for the tailights....vortex anno red/black gas cap....red gauge cluster with indigo....black rotor carriers with red buttons (maybe full-floating, dunno yet)....MAYBE some halos to match the bodylighting....red/black pazzos....PCIII....red anno bolt replacement....vortex triple replacement (then powdered gloss black)....
and even further down the line....painting the forks black and anno the tubes red....and eventually a custom paintjob....
the funny thing...it sounds like a ton of stuff, but because it's all black and red....it's subtle....i love it....

New ProGrip Grips
Ranking of project 1-10 (10 being worst):
Cost: 2 - very cheap (about $10 +shipping)
Difficulty: 1 - this is crazy easy
Functionality: ??? - verdicts still out on this (i'll talk about it below)
Visuals: 5 - looks nice...adds a nice little touch...
Time: 1 - i think it took longer to walk into my garage than to do the mod
Overall: 3 - cheap + looks nice + super easy + likely very functional = great mod
Alright, considering i have slacked for so long...here's a real brief write up on the grips....some things i noticed when i did it....tips, etc....
i don't have pics, i keep meaning to snap some but timing just sucks right now, during the holidays and all...but either way...here are the grips i got
They are ProGrips 724 Dual Density Road Grips $10.10 from Oncycles.com (http://www.oncycles.com/catalog.asp?department=grips&product=3361)
They are nice grips..very squishy...they are gelish in texture and I imagine will feel real nice when riding...
when i got them, these are NOT open ended grips...there are two types of grips...open ended for bar ends and close ended for bikes without (i think MX don't have ends)...
#1 now no need to worry...if you have ends, all you need to do is grab a box cutter or xacto knife and go to town...the ends have a sort of ring so you can see where to cut....the rubber is so pliable that it only took me about 2 minutes to do both....now don't worry about how they look...because the bar ends will over hang the cut part so no one will ever see it...just make sure that your hole you cut is somewhat close to the opening of the grip....in other words...look through the end you didn't cut and you should be able to see all the way through...if there are little overhangs in the opening, try to trim them a little...remember it DOESN'T have to be perfect....
#2 go to your bike....there are a lot of ways to remove your OEM grips...the most effective from what i have read is the compressed air method where you shoot air under the grip using a compresser...this allows the grip to glide off the bar....however, unless you have access to a compressor, you're SOL....so i did it another way (although i have a compressor)...
if you bought grips you are likely REPLACING your old grips...i personally had NO need to keep my old ones...so i removed the bar ends (which you have to do for either method)....i tried to roll the grips off from the inside out...believe it or not, with a little muscle they'll roll down about half way...if they are glued really good, they may not...but here's the slick part...grab your knife you used to cut the ends and slit the grip....then pull and slit, pull and slit....essentially, you just cut the damn things off....LOL...really easy....now if you need your grips, this is not the method for you, but if you don't, this process takes about 15 seconds for each grip....
#3 now that your grips are off, you have probably read stuff about grip glue...i did research and found that you don't REALLY need it unless you are really raking on your throttle a ton...and i mean beating on it...perhaps heavy track use....a nice option rather than trying to glue is the method i used...now you can use the reverse of the air compressor method to get them on...using air to sort of create a cushion to slide them on...or you can grab a can of hair spray....spray the inside of the grips until

I agree, softer grips maybe more comfortable but you can go thru them rather quickly. But then again at ten bucks a pop if they make a big difference I guess its worth it.

@tara
yeah i definitely feel it was a bit too "busy" with all the stickers...i mean some graphics are good...to break up a paint job (not a huge fan of just solid colors)....but all the honda, f4i stickers were annoying....once they were off, it looked a lot better...just make sure to grab the goo-gone, on the front, the stickers were worse to get off for some reason....
@alekinci
you know i heard that too, but i figure the same thing as shawny, it's pretty cheap and simple to replace...i mean it really took all of 5 minutes to swap out...and i can say, although i haven't ridden it yet (hopefully this week), they are a ton softer....i would gladly swap them out year over year for just the aesthetics...i mean i really like the look they give off...i know it sounds stupid...but there is something about grips....when people look at your bike, everyone notices your handlebars...lol....but even more so for the comfort...
i will keep you updated though on how they last...if they die early...maybe i try stiffer ones next time...either way....they are better then the stock ones and for $10...you can't go wrong!
thanks for the comments though, ALWAYS appreciated...
i am hoping this thread becomes a good place to check up and learn random things about mods...as it seems like i am doing a lot (maybe i'm not ???) haha....

this weekend...here's the plan....of which i KNOW some will get done....
#1 take pictures - i KNOW my buddy is coming over and he's bringing his good camera...and I will be taking the pictures so i should have a ton to show what has actually been done...
#2 install my vortex frame sliders
#3 test out the new ss lines since the brakes will finally be bled
#4 install my APE CCT
#5 install the rest of the LED bodylighting
the main priority is pictures (which should be fast) and the LED bodylighting....but that is dependent upon if i can fit my bike in a small space that is capable of turning out the lights...so we'll see....worst case scenario, everything gets done EXCEPT the LED lighting....but we'll see...
stay tuned

Ah nothing too crazy. I just want to light up the slots inthe side fairings, the ground underneath, and the swingarm area. I'll probably go with red. You got a remote? Where did you get that?

yeah i am doing pretty much the same...not the ground though...just the engine bay and perhaps the tail a little bit by the swingarm....i have it mapped out, just have to find the placement to get the look i want.....
as for the remote...ahhh...this was a wonderful little find that i found on another forum....you can get them at autozone...it's a little box that is essentially four relays (you can control four devices)...you wire the power to it and the the light box (where all the light connections come from) to it and you get a remote like a remote door unlock control and that's it...instant remote lights...here it is...

I'll take pics of it...took me awhile to sort of pre-wire it all...but i have it all ready to go hooked into two molex connectors for the ground and power and then stuffed into the tail section on the side (to not affect what little space i have) connected to the battery....it's then ziptied so it doesn't move...works perfect...works like a charm too....

The linkity link doesn't work anymore - by the way great posts, certainly one of my favorites so to date :-)
I still haven't touched my bone stock 06 f4i (spent money on hemi ram 1500 pick up truck / black widow ramp / baxley sport chock ~ $30k worth of motorcycle accessories...) but I have a feeling once the snow thaws next spring and the bike comes out of storage I'll be doing many of the same things you have done.
I'm somewhat of a ricer at heart - started my car life owning a few RX-7's if that explains anything - so I'm interested in visual mods such as LED's / ground effects. Keep up the great work and get us some more pictures!!

I really like your shorty exhaust..... And I also have a 01 CBR 600 f4i... Where can I find that same exhaust and around how much was yours???
here you go my friend... this is probably what you're looking for
thanks oodayvidoo (http://www.cbrforum.com/showProfile.asp?memid=18791)..... that is exactly what I was looking for..... .those shorty exhausts are mean..... I definitly need to order one this friday/payday....... Do you (or anybody else) know about the streel legality of these pipes? -dirt
ffingers
02-11-2008, 05:35 PM
i don't think you'll have an issue....they are based of the GTYR pipe on the yamaha if i am not mistaken....they sound awesome...are light as hell...and you MAY see SOME performance gain...just that it's a little more torque...but not really a lot.....either way...BEST mod i have done to my bike...and at the low low introductory rate;) that some of us got...it was a steal..
just so you know though...mine in the pic is the carbon fiber but i had the midpipe and end cap ceramic coated gloss black...typically the midpipe is polished metal....

alright...for all those hungry for a taste of the bike in progres...here's a couple pics....it's still being worked on (like the chain..haha)...also the lighting in my garage sucks so don't mind the pics....and she's a little dirty..i am so ashamed!!! damn dust in the garage...
Alright...i'm a jerk...haha....it takes a lot of time to sit and take pictures and do a write up that i have been lagging....i have done a bunch of stuff and really need to start taking the time to write up the things...that being said...i am going to start today...i can't guarantee i can keep up a steady pace, but i'll try....my biggest problem is i JUST got my new camera so i need to take pics, then upload them, etc....so i have a few pics...so i'll try to start there....as always...let me know if you have any comments...
if there's something particular you want me to explain or take pics of, let me know...i will work on getting the rearsets pictured...;)

realizing i can't possibly post them in the order i did them now...i have done so much lol...here is the first...of one that i have pictures..
Ranking of project 1-10 (10 being worst):
Cost: 3 - pretty cheap ($22.95)
Difficulty: 4 - not very hard, depends on the quality of material
Functionality: 5 - there is no real functional aspect, it works as it should..haha
Visuals: 3 or 9 - looks awesome, HOWEVER, read the notes below
Time: 5 - you need to take your time doing this like any sticker app
Overall: 5 - it's a cool thing to do, if it's done right, many things to consider
Alright...in maintaining my red/black theme...i really wanted somethign to black out my headlights...now...knowing that light is our friend, I wanted something that wouldn't restrict light output but still get close to the effect i wanted.....
a few notes, i considered night shades spray tinting, and i considered actual tinting film...my issue is that i think it would restrict light output...seeing as i don't have my HIDs yet...i wasn't ready to attempt that....i think this is the best compromise although there are some things to watch out for...
alright....down to the install....
1) remove your upper fairing....shouldn't take too long, only a few screws and one wiring harness....take that to a comfy place inside for step 2....
2) take out the headlight assembly...once again, fairly easy...just a few screws....
* at this point i would take a little extra time and clean the whole thing up...if you have never taken it out before, it's likely dusty and dingy....whenever i disassemble something, i take the extra 20 minutes to clean it up....just makes me feel good plus i know stuff is just building up....
as you can see....the sheet is pretty big....(not big enough as you will find out later)....except i didn't measure it and i don't know if the size is true because there is a white portion of the mesh that is unusable....so i don't know if the size they say online includes this white portion or not....turns out...that white portion could have saved me...
4) now unfortunately i was watching a football game as i did this and didn't take any in between pics....so just listen...
make sure the surface of the headlight is clean....AND DRY.....the instructions suggest you work from the inside out...but i found that it was nearly impossible to do because of the size of the sheet needed to work with...so i temporarily laid out the sheet across the light housing and found it was JUST LONG ENOUGH to cover...so i started at one corner....
work very very very very very (did i say very yet?)....slowly placing the mesh on the headlight so that you have at least a small amount to fold over the edge of the housing...you want to slightly pull on it to give it some tension, but not too much as you can easily rip this stuff and muck it up....
just concentrate on laying it on the surfa

Well done, thanks for the update - do you have any pictures with the lights on? I would be curious to see both the bike and the actual output (against a wall or something). Before and after would be cool too but that may be asking too much ;-)
We all enjoy your updates, keep them coming.
In the next few weeks I'll get my "diary" going as well, but so far all I have done is vortex sliders which a billion people have done already.
How are those LED's coming along......?
ffingers
02-12-2008, 04:07 PM
I could probably do that...the only issue i have at the moment is that it's snowing outside and very very cold....my bike is in an indoor heated garage at my condo and i can't turn out the lights or anything....so that puts a damper on the light output photos...
as for the LEDs, same sort of deal...i don't have an area to actually work on them...(i need dark to check the placement)...so as it stands i still have 2 pods and 2 stips left to install...the stuff i have installed looks great...but it's not done yet...
i also have a vortex triple clamp to put on and get powdercoated....also have a vortex gas cap coming too...

Looking good though for sure.....

ffingers- I did something very similar to your headlight mod with some "tint" from Wal-Mart...Not trying to hijack your thread, just adding to it. You get enough of this stuff to cover the headlights numerous times, so its okay if you make a mistake. link to thread (http://www.cbrforum.com/m_193163/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#193163)
BTW- your bike is looking good!

02-18-2008, 04:53 PM
@carbon they are in gloss....everything in black that i have done is gloss...as for a better shot, i am going to take a few as i have gotten more than a few requests for side shots of the pegs and rearsets...stay tuned...
@onarom...yeah i thought about tinting and MAY move to that as i am not all that impressed with the stuff i got...my only concern is light output...on this stuff...the light output is damn near identical to stock....so i am not really losing anything....with tint, it will dim them a bit...how did your light output change?
and always feel free to add here...this is a thread to help people with ideas for their bike...so additions are always welcomed...
and thanks for the compliment...it's got more stuff than is here...i have since added pazzos, putting on my vortex gas cap, adding the rim stripes on my newly PC'd rims...plus there are LEDs that i haven't taken a picture of yet...so i will update this at some point...just no time lately...too busy working at work and on the bike!

The amount of light seems to be the same. The only difference is near the outer edges of the light spread, you can see the pattern (holes of light). I honestly don't even notice it anymore. It holds up really well. And if you are fortunate enough, I bought mine at "Big Lots" for $3.00

depends on for what stuff....
i would have to look up some of the stuff...but i know this off the top of my head...
exhaust and midpipe was $50 (ceramic gloss black coat)
rims where $150 (but there are a lot of incidentals like tire removal, remounting, balancing, etc.)
i think the chainguard, rearsets, and heel guards was like $50 or so....
calipers were $40 or 45 i think assembled (they disassembled them for me because i was too lazy [8D])
problem is i had a bunch of stuff pc'd all at once so i don't know individual totals...
if you want more numbers, just let me know!

Alright everyone...here are few pictures showing things i have done...NOW....i have to preface this....
She's still being worked on so there are a few things that aren't 100% right with her...meaning there's a missing fairing bolt, etc....Also...my garage SUCKS for a couple of reasons....first being it's gets dusty as hell in it...i can't keep her clean if i am not riding her everyday...so although i have tried...she looks filthy in the pics...and she is....when riding season comes around, i'll give her a top to bottom scrub down....so these pics are jus to show the WORK...not the quality of the finished product...also...my garage lighting SUCKS....really bad....because it's low light and i am way too lazy to whip out the tripod....it uses the flash which accentuates problem #1 with my garage....
oh and one more thing...the bolts....that look all nasty...they are all being replaced!
so please please please...don't judge my baby by these pics...bad garage + bad lighting + a lot of dust = my baby looking horrible...
come the spring when she can finally exit the garage, i will take some good pics...
ahh now...after all that...here they are...

the grips were from oncycles.com for like $12 or so i think
and the i got the chain (520 conversion -1 upfront) and the red EK MVXz Chain from Carolina Performance (i think)...they were running a special on the board, the chain, sprocket, and speedohealer for some price..i think i paid like $250 or so (not 100% sure)...for all three....

Aken, I gotta know what the mountain dew bottle/can mod is that you have there lol
Aken
03-01-2008, 10:31 PM
Haha :) It's just a cut-up Mountain Dew can wrapped around the rear shock reservoir. I've seen people do Red Bull and the occasional beer can as well. I'm a Mountain Dew nut, so it was only natural. It's really easy to do, too. Just loosen the hose clamp holding the reservoir in place, cut up a can to fit (make sure to wash it), wrap it around the reservoir and tighten the clamp back down.

Aken, I used a SobeAdrenaline can. I have a red 01, and the color matches fairly well. Also, if you position the can just right, you get"Adrenaline Rush" at the top, and then "High Performance" at the bottom. The guy that I bought it from had a Red Bull can on his, and I liked the idea but I wanted to make it mine.

Nice ride man! I have recently been looking into doing a few mods, for my '02 F41. As I was looking around I found your thread...job well done!
Quick question, for us novice folks...
Are there any specialty tools that you would call a "must have", "recommended" or "optional"? Assuming the basics are in my garage...

Only weird tool I've needed to work on my bike was a 22mm socket for the front axle. We didn't have any that big, had to borrow it. Otherwise most of your work will be done with hex wrenches, screw drivers, and metric sockets. (In my experience at least; I don't do any motor work so I don't know how fancy that stuff gets.)

no specialty tools really unless you count a chain breaker for the chain and a few other tools that may not be readily available....meaning a torque wrench, etc....most stuff is pretty standard...trust me, working on the bike, you will slow start stocking your garage with "must have" tools...haha...
sorry i have been out for awhile, new kid and moving has pretty much stalled my bike build, but look for it to kick back up in the winter months as i now have a garage...mmm.....fun times ahead....!!
