View Full Version : stripped my engine mount!
Dirtytoes 06-26-2007, 10:25 AM i was installing a frame slider bolt, and i guess i tightened it too much.
one i heard that noise, "chrkafo", i knew it was stripped.
from wat i understand, i have to tap/re-thread it?
do i have another choice?
also, the engine mount bolt is a 10mm, if re-threading, would i HAVE-TO go up 1mm? meaning to 11mm? or can i still keep it at 10mm?
lastly, can i still ride my bike?
Tahoe SC 06-26-2007, 12:54 PM assuming that you can still get the old bolt out!!!
have you tried? if you can't get it out, i'm guessing you'll need to drill it out. you'll need to go up in size.
Dirtytoes 06-26-2007, 01:54 PM the bolt didn't get stuck, it just won't go in past a certain point if being used with the frame slider...itll basically just turn in place.
but if i take the frame slider outta the way(making the bolt longer cause there is nothing in the middle now), i noticed that the threads for the engine mount are only gone in the middle of the hole(very small portion)....meaning there is still some thread left at the beginning and the end of the hole.....so the bolt goes almost all the way in, u think thats enough? or should i still tap it?
chpsk8er630 06-26-2007, 03:24 PM I have read of people that just drill through it and then use a bolt with a nut on the other end so if it happens again you just replace the bolt and nut.

it sounds easy but i don't get it, can you explain?
i mean its the engine case, and there is no other side to put a nut on?
Dirtytoes 06-27-2007, 10:26 AM ohhhh ur talkin about the rear engine bolt, ehh?
its not that one that stripped...its the bolt that goes IN the engine.
02cbrf4i4u 06-27-2007, 11:17 AM This exact thing happend to me!! But I tried putting the bolt back in and it took! I think it had a little thread left. But from what I read, yes going up one tread size will work. My heart dropped when I heard that pop!
or you can get a Helicoil kit and fix it that way to.
Tahoe SC 06-27-2007, 12:21 PM in this case you 'can' try to clean up the thread with a tap of the same size. if that doesn't work then you'll need to go bigger. if option no. 1 doesn't work and you still want to keep the same size then you can helicoil...but that involves some drilling...muhahhahah

+1
Yeah try that first. You might get lucky.

oh ya, same here.
LOL
ya, i think that at least 75% of the thread is gone, so i can't tap with the same 10mm.
i bought a helicoil kit yesterday. but unless i drop the motor, i had to make a custom insert tool which i already did. but i don't trust myself to tap it, cause if i screw up, its a friggin motor-mount....don't wanna make it any worse.
right now, the bikes at the dealer, if they can't do it, i'm gonna take it to my welder guy who is also a mechanic, and we're gonna do it there.
sucks to not have ur bike!!!
after this is done, i'm gonna go get me a craftsmen 3/8 torque wrench.
SoRAD 06-28-2007, 11:32 PM i have stripped the one on the stunt bike 2 times now. i am now a m12 1.50. its pretty solid now because i tapped the silver spacer aswell as the motor mount. its very easy to retap the mount.
Dirtytoes 06-29-2007, 06:21 PM im tryin to keep it the same size cause
1. i don't wanna have to get a new/custom bolt for my mount/cage everytime i wanna change something
2. i havn't heard anything bad about helocoil, it apparrently makes it even stronger
ps. anyone else see the helocoil ad that google is putting on this page right now? LOL
