So I rode a solid 70mph half hour on the freeway to go see a friend. He likes bikes so was checking out mine. I left the light on for like 2-3 minutes, and the bike refused to start!
Had to push start it, thankfully he was there to help... So I figure my battery's dying (just under 2 years old). Plausible?
The other thing...
I did an ebay search and found a gel filled battery being advertised. Looked it up online:
http://www.toolparts.co.uk/acatalog/Motorcycle_Batteries.html
and they claim safety from spills and deep discharge recovery. Anybody have a perspective on these?
Thanks

is it a deep cycle battery? if it is then it works the same way as the optima yellow top.
gel batts are great stuff...if it'll fit the bike then get it...i think it may be too tall to fit...you'll need to do some trimming, etc.

i have a 2006 f4i and battery died two months ago. so i feel your pain plus 1. motorcycle batteries stink and do not recover from deep discharge well at all. i invested in a tender and now have my new battery hooked up during the down season... i am not risking getting stuck on the side of the freeway again.
as for the gell filled battery, no clue, first time i even hear of them, i will have to look into it.

I've got a Optima red top (about three years old)in my RX7 and I start this car maybe four times a year and itstarts without a problem everytime. Gel batts are the way to go but you're going to pay for it.

yup.. they last longer and cost way more. the charge is more controlled as well as the discharge. its difficult to overcharge them unless you running a heavyduty alternator that also feeds the PS3 and 4 lcds on your bike.

Actually the ebay auction is only 10 bucks more than the standard replacement (which is half the price you'd pay at a dealer anyway)
seller id is flyncycle

My bike.
2006 F4i, 7000 miles, 16 months old. I have left lights on a few times, but not in the past few months. Bike never sits, but sometimes 6 or seven short (<5 miles) trips per day at low speeds (<45mph).
Rode bike for 1/2 hour @ 50mph, pulled in clutch then the bike died. Wouldn't start. Then 'push-started' it. Rode 1/2 hour home. Bike started 5 times in a row. ie start/kill/start/kill..by the 5th time it started but it was sssllloooww. charges at 14.1 or so volts...bikes seems fine now. But I am afraid to take it on a ride too far away. Started it and noticed that the digital voltmeter dropped to 9.6 volts, but that number may be inaccurate since it not a machine that is designed to lock into the lowest voltage.
My guess is the battery, but I am open to suggestions.
