View Full Version : Aftermarket Side Mirrors
YellowShark 10-03-2006, 12:32 AM Howdy.
When I'm riding my '06 F4I, I notice that I can not see directly behind me, through my mirrors. The elbow pads of my jacket obstruct my line of sight. Does anyone else have this problem (unless you're a squid, and you don't wear a jacket)? Furthermore, are there any aftermarket mirrors that have longer arms, so that I can avoid this problem? Hell, I'd only need another inch or two.
Thanky
voodoochyl 10-03-2006, 12:55 AM I have this problem, but I just adjust the mirrors the best I can, and move my head a little when I need a clearer shot at what's behind. I don't mind too much. However, I bought some "chrome" mirrors on Ebay and installed them, now I can't see Dick Butkus. They are advertised as small and light, and look cool in the photo, but they don't adjust very well. Oh well, back to the drawing board.
Leveltwo 10-03-2006, 01:52 AM i have the same problem, i have them adjusted so i can see the lanes next to me, and then i just move my elbow up if i need to look behind me, seems to be the best way to get everything into sight...ive heard bar end mirrors are good, but i dont like how they stick out from your handlebars
Pugetpower 10-03-2006, 02:34 AM I sawed my mirror stalks approx in half, inserted enough 1/2" copper water pipe to extend them approx 2" more (cant remember exactly). I just epoxied the pipe in place, faired the joint at
each end with BONDO, sanded smooth, slightly roughened with fine grit, then painted gloss black. Makes for less stressful riding. You can see the both lanes like before but also can analyze car shapes
coming up on your tail for you know who.
PHXf4i 10-03-2006, 07:19 AM i added the little 1 or 2 inch(cant remember size) convex circular mirrors on each mirror. helps me see alot better.
I recently managed to adjust my mirrors so I can see half the lane behind me, so that is enough to know if there is a car behind me. I rotated them counter clockwise so they kindof stick up in the air then adjusted them from there.
Before I couldn't see the lane behind me at all without moving my elbow. I still do move my elbow sometimes to get a good look but it's minimized.
five0addict 10-03-2006, 03:38 PM i used to get annoyed by that but i pushed the mirrors as far forward as they can go and ajusted them from there.
now i can see directly behind in both mirrors with only a little bit of my shoulder/arm in the mirror.

The only reason sportriders need mirrors he he he
JaSoN 10-04-2006, 12:17 AM I have the same problem. usually i have to either move by elbow in to my stomach or out in a comical fashion to even see half the lane behind me, then i hang off the bike to the side im looking to get the rest of the view. its just easier to turn around.
JJHUNSECKER 10-04-2006, 11:16 PM You could get mirror extenders, they're a little oval of material that go between the base of the mirror and the fairing. It raises the mirror by about an inch maybe? So the theory is you might see more. And they don't look too janky...
Let me know if anyone's actually used these, they're 60 bucks and are just little pieces of rubber or something so I haven't gotten them yet, such a ripoff...

JJHUNSECKER 10-04-2006, 11:17 PM Also get wide angle glass instead of flat glass. EMCO makes these wide angle replacement mirrors and they're fine, they look good, work well, I see a little more...
ikhoudvanu199 10-08-2006, 09:41 PM i have had the same problem...glad its not just me...let me kno if anyone comes up w/ more solutions
fisherktm 10-08-2006, 11:41 PM I bought some extenders on EBAY some time ago. They are a big improvement over the stock placement of the mirrors.
RojerLockless 10-09-2006, 12:15 AM what are mirrors? 8)
e3gordon 10-09-2006, 03:28 AM This is a lil off topic, but has anyone ever seen aftermarket mirrors four an F4i with built in turn signals on them? Similar to the ones on new Suzuki's
05_f4i_rider 05-09-2008, 01:00 AM I just gotmy F4i last saturday. :D Anyways, I got the same problem too....i can't see anything behind me. I think i'm gonna gonna get my rubber spacers from my old skateboard and make anicemold to lift my mirrors. If this is a stupid idea please stop me.
PlayfulGod 05-09-2008, 01:11 AM ya cant be lazy n ride, well unless you wanna ride a cruiser or like your on one. Guys, move your arm, turn your head n look. theres no aftermarket mirrors going to make it so you just sit n look in em like you can your car.;)

Someone wrote a post about it. You have to make a bracket I believe. They sit flatter on the fairing so you get a wider viewing angle. I wouldn't mind picking up a pair but those mirrors are so easy to break right off if you drop your bike so screw it.
Martins 05-09-2008, 10:29 AM i think its this months super street bike mag that has a review on like 15 different kinds of bike mirrors,
most of them have integrated lights
and some are hella expensive
you might wana check it out
as for a rear view camera , i was walking around canadian tire yesterday killing time and saw a rear view cam and screen for sale
Goose Rider 05-09-2008, 11:26 AM Wow...I thought I was the only one with this problem [8D] Can't see crap without tucking my elbow in and tilting my head to see a glimpse of a car behind me
sometimes tough on the highway to turn my head as helmet acts like a giant sail and cranks on my neck lol
Good to know it ain't just me :D

You have to do some modifications to your bike and the signals.......I did it on mine and loved it for a while....now Im thinking on going back to stock.....I took them off and have block off plates on now. But you can see EVERYTHING behind you with them on.
Heres how they look......and I got them for 35 bucks from a friend who was parting out his 07 1000.

reaper2022 05-09-2008, 08:44 PM here's a crazy idea.. while riding, take your left hand and put it on the passenger seat. Now, turn your shoulders counter-clockwise, and turn your head to the left. Isn't that amazing? You can see directly behind you perfectly! (I prefer this over just turning my head because you can look directly behind you without worrying about accidently turning the bars a little) [8D]
But honestly, I think the stock mirrors will be the best. I know with my LP mirrors, I can't see s**t.
movi cbr 05-09-2008, 09:03 PM i also have the same problem, and about them mirrors with integrated turn signals, they are all over ebay, take a look
amnesia 05-09-2008, 09:36 PM I bought a pair of these on E-Bay last year:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1999-2007-Honda-CBR-600-F4-F4i-Mirror-Extenders-Spacers_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35584QQihZ012QQ itemZ220232889488QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
They're cheap ($29) and they look as good as such things could look.
Do they help? Well............. not as much as the pictures in his auction!!!!!
They do make the visibility about 10-15% better. They're not perfect, but I haven't taken them off, so they must be better!
Problem is, because of the way the mirrors sit on the F4i (go look at yours) extending them by 2 inches moves them about 1.5 inches forward (what you don't want), and .5 inches sideways What you do want.

problem is, when you're riding around crazy kmart school of driving graduate infested areas like ATL, you want to know what's going on behind you at ALL TIMES not just when you have a chance to take your focus off what's in front of you and turn to look. It's a matter of safety. But yeah, I've given up on the search because if you grab a mirror and position it exactly where you can see what's behind you without turning your head or sitting back or pulling your elbow in, you'll quickly realize the mirrors would have to be spaced way out to the sides beyond anything reasonable (because we sit so close up to the mirrors) extensions & CRG barend style ones probably help but they still aren't the solution .. p.s. I read some negative reviews about those helmets with rear view mirrors (the main problem being that it only sees directly where your head is pointed and not much of a peripheral)

Do you have a link to those EMCO mirrors, JJHunsecker?
f4iman 05-13-2008, 03:38 AM I just tuck the ol' elbows in or I just turn the bike slightly like your warming up tires to see whats directly behind you
