View Full Version : My License Plate Flipper

Here's my License Plate Flipper, it actually works awesome, flips down fast, and flips up fast, microswitches stop the motor once the plate is up or down, uses a regulated 5v (LM7805 not shown) Which I have mounted on a small PCB and goes with the bikes wireharness, I know its not the prettyest looking (lots of unnessary holes) but what do you guys think...

Pretty slick contraption.
I wonder if there will be a "special" message when the plates flipped up.

12oclocker
08-14-2006, 01:34 AM
Got it installed, it works perfect!, Even held up doing wheelies and Stoppies all day!
Its dark right now, but I will get some vids of it in action tomorrow for you guys :D

I was actually trying to think of a cool message to put under the plate, so when it flips down you can read it.... kind of to double as a retaliatory remark I can send to a$$hole drivers, lol

How much did it cost you to make including time etc vs the $150 you could have bought 1 for...

care to share schematics? looks good and i want one to build myself but havent had the time to draw a diagram.

Err

i use loosely fastened zipties. anything faster than 10mph and the plate is flapping in the wind!

12oclocker
08-15-2006, 01:39 PM
Sure I'll share the schematics and the plans on how to build it, you can throw it together for about 30 bucks, much cheaper than 150.
I have a new one I am building that is a gearbox reduced Chain Drive, to kind of slow it down a little, right now is flips up and down so fast it bounces off the stoppers a little bit, so I want to reduce the bounce. And the chain drive will hold up much better over time. its not raining today, so I'll post up a vid of it working in about an hour :D

08-22-2006, 11:14 PM
Well I did a redesign, now I've got a small gearbox with a chain drive, and spring chain tensioners, the chain drive pulls the plate up or down. should last for a long time, been doing stoppies and wheelies pretty consistantly with it. I ordered some metal working tools (brake/sheer/punch) to make the process of building and fabricating a little easier, lol. I'll probably make a few more just cause their fun to build, and throw them on ebay to anyone who wants one, I'll post a pic of the new chain drive soon, sorry I didnt get a vid up, my DVD cam battery was dead, and I have been too lazy too look for the charger, lol

I would like to make one, so any help would be cool, I didn't see any instructions. Hey if you are really interested in making another one just for the fun ;)I would love one and would pay for all the stuff (plus I would probably mail you some of the supplies, like carbon fiber (I work at a carbon fiber manufacture) instead of metal.)

I found something like yours on ebay for 150 bones.....what r your thought for selling tprice

12oclocker
09-01-2006, 04:49 AM
At least Half that! $150 is too much money!
I am making them for fun, I'm not going to charge much over what it cost to make them, and I'll post the part list and prices so everyone can see how much it cost.
I'm not into gouging people...
I was thinking about modifying the control panel... having a single momentay push button with an LED, Push to activate (LED illuminates), Push again and it deactivates (LED Turns off) Right now I use a toggle switch, but I think the LED and button would be neater, it would take a few more parts on the PCB, but not much, just 2 IC's, & resistors, capacitors, which are low cost parts anyway.
I am going to have pro looking PCB boards too, check out my most recient PCB Design I did,
its the best damn looking homemade PCB I've ever seen, lol...
I have fun doing this stuff, my goal I guess is to make the money back I paid for my brake/sheer and metal punch, both of those cost a pretty penny, but I need em to cut, bend, and punch holes in metal :D I still havent got my brake/sheer in the mail yet, was only supposed to be back ordered until 8/28, but I called them today, and now they said it may be as late as 9/13 before my brake/sheer is delievered, those ba$tards. My uncle does own a machine shop, he might let me use some of his tools, or make the piece for me if I give him the measurements, some way or another I'll get it done soon.

OMFG!!!!! The Video shows just how kick @$$ this really is. After seeing it in action I want one now. LMAO. As asked by someone prior, have you thought of making it safe against the elements (Rain, puddles, etc)?
Another thing I was curious about, is it pretty un-noticable when in it's normal position and say, being looked at by a police officer? Like if you get pulled over somewhere and they are looking at your plates they won't be like "Hey whats this motor and chain drive attached to your license plate for....? LMAO That'd suck.
All it's missing now is the message when it flips down. Something like BACK OFF! LMAO.
That thing is too cool man.

12oclocker
09-01-2006, 08:02 AM
I road in a light rain the other day and it didnt affect it, since the gearbox sits above the aluminum mounting plate, the bottom of the plate got wet, and the gearbox stayed dry.
as for heavy rain, ive got an idea on how to completely seal the gearbox, but I havent actually done it yet.
Currently when viewing the plate from the rear, its totally un-notacable that it folds under. from the side though, you can see the small gearbox and chain drive, it might be a good idea to put aluminum side panels or something on both sides to hide it, but then again, I dont plan on getting pulled over, LOL.
Yes, I havent thought of a really funny message to put under the plate yet, but their will be one on their soon, LOL.

LouSiffer
09-01-2006, 08:56 AM
If you decide to entertain yourself by making it undetectable and weather resistant I'll want to buy one for my 91 F2 for sure. I think for a message I'd just keep it simple like "BACK OFF!" in bold easy to read letters lol. Imagine some dillhole tailgating you then <Flip>..........<FLIP> LMAO I so could have used that yesterday when riding and some punk kid in a tuner crawled up my @$$ on a 2 lane hwy, I was doing the speed limit and cars were in front of me FFS.

I'd get one, but I don't have a place to put it, and my plate is mounted infront of my rear tire so its already pretty hard to see, but you deffinately have something here, and props to you for hooking the guys up on here, but seriously you need to sell a bunch of those on ebay and make some $$$$
