Just signed up for this forum and I already think its great. I have been trying to find someplace that had information on my bike, have not come across much.

Has anyone here had any expierence with fairing repair? I bought my bike with 17,000 miles on it, the owner had just brought back from honda with a lot of parts replaced(had not been ridden in a long time) and then dropped it. Wife made him sell it, the short version is I have an excellent running bike with a huge scrape on the side, no cracks but the scrape at its worst point goes all the way through. Any way to seal that for repaint? I have heard of plastic welding for cracks but not sure if that is what is required here. Thanks for any info, sorry for the long post.

I would try to use fiberglass and resin. First cut a patch the size you need to cover the damage. Then you mix up a cup of resin and hardner, I think the ratio is 1 drop of hardner to every oz. of resin. Prep the area by sanding it first. Lay the fiberglass on the area and spread the resin on, let it sit overnight. Sand the area down to original shape, prime, and paint. Pretty easy really, it sounds like a big ordeal but really it's not. Good to have you on the forum, hope this helps.

just did some major repairs to my friends bike last night.

well to start off

1. sand the area you r going to repair with a 36 grit pad ( works better if u have air or electric grinder). All u want to do is remove the paint and rough up the panel.

2. cut 3 pieces of fiberglass mat out. Make the first piece just large enough to cover the break, the second piece should be bigger than the first piece(+1/4 inch on each side), and the third piece should be bigger than the second.

3. mix some resin and hardener in a plstic container (I used an old coolwhip container) . 30 drops of hardener for every ounce of resin.

4. with a paint brush, brush some mixed resin over the break. Then get ur first piece of fiberglass mat and dip it in the mixed resin and then place it over the break. Then dip ur second piece in the mixed resin and then place the patch over the first piece. Do the same for the third piece. Try to lay them as smooth as possible. gloves r advised.

5. Remove ur gloves if u have them on. now get a piece of ceran wrap and lay it over ur patch and smooth the area out. This helps remove any bubbles left in between the patches. Be careful and try not to slide ur patch off ur break.

6. let it dry over night

7. after the resin is hard sand the area with 80 grit sand paper to feather the patch in with the panel.

8. then use some polyester body filler to fill in any pin holes.

9. sand the body filer with 180 grit sand paper

10. primer. Let it dry over night. After the primer dries wet sand with 320 grit to smooth out the primer.

11. paint.

There u go, now u can repair almost any plastic piece on ur bike.

thanks for this information! I tried to repair my fairings and I screwed up because the paint didnt take in some places after i applied the primer; and it didnt come out smoothly at all... *sigh* i'll retry using your tips.

hi guys new to this forum i have an 87 cbr 1000 that the owner before me fixed it with fiberglass i dont no how long it was on there before i bought it but i was able to just pull it off. found a plastic welder at harbor fright for fourty bucks works great but u need to practice with it first.
