View Full Version : Noise from engine
pimpax56 09-25-2009, 01:54 AM So socal is super hot right now and i dont know if it has anything to do with it, but ive noticed recently that my bike has a weird ticking sound. I know its definitely not my cctl because i just changed that and it doesnt rattle at a certain rpm. Its like a ticking noise at idle when my bike is about 215 degrees cuz its so hot. 215 is when you can really hear it at idle but you can hear it at lower temps as well. During idle you can hear it and when i give it gas to go i can hear the ticking go faster and faster as the revs go up. Could it be my valves? A rider told me that if i can hear something then something inside must broken for sure like a spring or something but i just want more feedback than just from one person. Thanks
dale914 09-26-2009, 05:38 PM mine too, and while we're here, how hot is too hot? I've had mine to 225 and been real sad about that... I'm used to Porsches that can get to 235, but their air cooled... so where's too hot? and ticking noise... also I think I hear something getting louder/ticking past 5k rpms, but then I take off my helmet, listen and it seems fine...
redzintimidator 09-26-2009, 06:55 PM your valves may need adjusting..how many miles are on the bike??
Also, the injectors make a ticking noise thats noticeable at idle, but you shouldn't hear it otherwise..
R Dub 09-26-2009, 07:01 PM Yeah I would say it sounds like a valve tick to me.
Da11en47 09-26-2009, 08:18 PM I hear that kind of stuff as well, its usually when my bike it warming up though, during idling, but I swear I hear something of a tick noise sometimes, I have 14,000.
marky82 09-26-2009, 11:09 PM The manual calls for the first valve check/adjustment at 16,000 miles, you might be needing one a few thousand miles early.
dale914 09-27-2009, 11:24 PM 24k here.. is the valve adjustment something I could do (easy as a vw's) or is it something I need to have taken in for?
pimpax56 09-28-2009, 02:06 AM im at 30k and thanx for feedback now i know its a valve now its time to sell my bike after 10 months and upgrade to a 1000
redzintimidator 09-28-2009, 09:14 AM if you have engine experience and a feeler gauge, the honda service manual, and some time, you should be fine. Thats just checking them, if they are bad you have to buy shims for them. My honda shop will check valves for $100, and adjust if necessary for 75 more. Im in debate if i am just going to do it myself still since i was just in there replacing the cam chain.
pimpax56 10-02-2009, 08:34 PM so it turns out that the noise is coming from the crankcase or crankshaft or something. I took it to a shop and thats where they narrowed down the sound to. Anyone know what it can be because theyre gna take it apart tomorrow and see whats up. I just want a brief idea of what the possibilities can be
929pimp 10-02-2009, 08:45 PM Hey guys..my friend is experiencing the same sort of thing.....at 5 - 7 thousand RPM's theres like a ticking type noise but to me it sounds like a vibration type noise kinda from around the upper fairing stay.....and it doesnt do anything if its revved up through smoothly but if you hold the throttle right at 5-7 it is most pronounced. Any ideas?
pimpax56 10-02-2009, 11:08 PM yeah cam chain tensioner. its a whole different story. Search it up cct or cctl
pimpax56 10-02-2009, 11:08 PM still need feedback please thanks
Caribanyaro 10-04-2009, 11:00 AM Hi, also have a clicking noise, can't pin point'it; started after i slip and tip over on left side at a stop position in neutral. Can you help or direct me to a specific post?.
Thanks.
Too bad is raining in the Columbia Gorge, no much riding until summer, sad...
yourejustintime 10-07-2009, 09:52 PM adjust your chain, it might bee lose... check the play.
dans03f4i 10-09-2009, 06:11 PM Ive got the same problem, its a ticking and a quiet whirring noise up to about 5k rmps, but after that I cant hear it anymore. My bike only has 10,XXX miles, so its probabally not valves.
Kraxor 10-09-2009, 08:45 PM Dumb question...but how bad is it to be riding when the valve clearence need to be check/adjusted?
yourejustintime 10-10-2009, 03:29 PM yeah sorry to tell ya this but i really think its the valves did you run it with out oil for a while? or go a ways past a over due oil change?
Incognito 10-11-2009, 03:29 AM Wow, somebody mentions the word ticking and everyone gets all hysterical, lol.
so it turns out that the noise is coming from the crankcase or crankshaft or something. I took it to a shop and thats where they narrowed down the sound to. Anyone know what it can be because theyre gna take it apart tomorrow and see whats up.
Any word on the diagnosis? I'm kinda curious myself.
pimpax56 10-11-2009, 08:56 PM it was a couple things leading to one noise. It was something with the crankshaft bearing, timing chain had to be replaced, and valves needed adjustment. All came out to $150 only because it was my friends shop. I didnt bother going into detail with him. He finished in one whole day of work. I started my bike no sound. It actually had alot more power because he said it was loosing compression before. So now its all good
bwayers 10-14-2009, 08:55 PM damn you got hooked up if they went into your bottom end and did a valve adjustment for $150
usually you'll pay $150 low end for a valve adjustment alone
