VTR1000F Firestorm 1998-2005 (these are the levers I have on my '95)
These do fit the 87-88.

As a reminder... 97-07 Blackbird brake levers do not work with our bikes.
I accidentally ordered the wrong ones, and when I got them in I tried to fit them anyway; the clutch lever works perfectly, the brake lever does not (starting to apply force to the master cylinders' piston when the lever is as good as touching the grip is NOT a good thing ).

There's also the flip / adjustable /extendable ones I have on my 1990 1000F

Ya can run them short or long as you need.

bars have been changed since this pic ..... same levers tho'

Sorry you had to find out the hard way. I did the same with another bike, which is why I started this thread.

I must have remembered it wrong, or clicked the wrong link... I'm now trying to buy just the bike specific black piece (or bracket, or whatchamacallit) that connects to the universal parts like the lever and adjuster, though the complete levers are available separate.
Just hope to be able to buy that piece, or I'll be stuck with a single lever no one will buy and I can't use
