As it doesnt make the noise when cranked over ... only after the engine fires ... I'd be inclined to go with davethepom's thoughts on this and check that the starter motor isn't dis-enguaging properly!

Looks like a process of elimination ....

Does it make the same noise if ya bump start it? ... That would definately eliminate the starter motor!

Don't just ride it 'til it blows mate, although the rr motor could be a laugh. shakey's bump start is a good plan. Also, is there any change when you pull the clutch in and put in in gear?

Hey, thanks guys for not giving up on me yet. I am going to try the clutch and bump start thing tomorrow got home kinda late tonight and had to cook for the kids too. Let you know how it goes.

how did this pan out ? It sounds like starter clutch trouble to me . I wish you luck.

It was the starter/alternator chain. I had to split the case to replace it. Then the next year I took the 88 engine out and put in a 96 with 8k miles on it. I still have the 88 engine if anybody needs one.
